No Turning Back: Kathleen Turner, Book 1 | [Tiffany Snow]

No Turning Back: Kathleen Turner, Book 1

It’s the middle of the night when Kathleen hears fighting coming from her neighbor Sheila’s apartment. As disturbing as that is, it’s the ominous sound of silence afterwards that keeps Kathleen from falling back to sleep. Slipping from bed with the intention of making sure everything is okay, Kathleen knocks on her friend’s door, only to find Sheila murdered, her naked body sprawled on sheets stained crimson with her blood. Shock and horror are followed by gritty determination when it becomes clear that Sheila’s death isn’t random and it isn’t the result of a jealous boyfriend.

Publisher's Summary

Kathleen Turner has goals. She moved to Indianapolis to start seeing to them, but things aren’t going quite as well as she’d hoped. She’s a runner for a high-powered law firm in town, not the most prestigious of positions, but it and her part-time bartender gig at least pays the bills. And one of the senior partners is a dreamboat in that obscenely rich, disturbingly good looking, slightly snobbish sort of way.

It’s the opening gambit in a web of murder, deceit, conspiracy, and fraud that stretches to the law firm for which Kathleen works. Maybe to the very office that Blane Kirk commands.

And Kathleen Turner, law office runner, can trust no one if she wants to survive.

"I wish Kathleen was a bit tougher"

These books have promise, but I don't know if I'm 100% sold. The mystery was interesting enough, but I just wasn't sold on our heroine, Kathleen Turner. I know she's supposed to be young, but how anyone can be that naive, I have no idea. She blindly trusted everyone from the many men trying to get into her pants to her random neighborhood. And she was so hell bent on getting justice for her murder neighbor. I know she's your friend and all, but seriously, you are going to risk your life to find out who killed her? That type of loyalty is usually reserved for someone you know more than a couple of months and had a few cups of coffee with. She just made so many dumb mistakes and most of what she accomplished was from blind luck as opposed to any real intelligence or skill. And she was constantly being saved by someone else. I mean, constantly. I like my heroes (men or women) to be a little more self-sufficient. I had high hopes for this cop's daughter, but overall, she disappointed me, and after a while, the book started to feel a little long with her repeated antics.

I think I'll read one more book in the series to see if things improve, because they do have potential. But if the next one is anything like the first, then I think it'll be the last.

Audiobook review: The narrator's voice was semi-robotic. It was weird because her reading of the dialogue was pretty decent. With the exception of the men's voices, I thought she did a pretty good job. But reading everything else, oh my...

    "Disappointing"

This book didn't live up to my expectations. I rarely guess the endings of detective novels. For some reason I just never manage to connect the dots before the protagonist does, and I like it that way. So when I read, or listen to, a novel and stay three or four steps ahead of the main character, it's not only annoying; it's a red flag that the book isn't very well done. Even though Kathleen was a bit dense, I still liked her. Most of the other characters were bland, with the exception of C.J..

Overall, it wasn't much of a mystery and it definitely wasn't memorable. It only earned 3-stars because I loved Angela Dawe's performance.

    "Kathleen Turner you rock!"
If you could sum up No Turning Back in three words, what would they be?

No way you can sum this book up in three words. It was fast paced, thrilling, full of suspense, moments of humor and some hot romance. Not to mention two gorgeous men and a very sassy leading lady.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

At the beginning I thought I had worked out what was going on but the plot had so many twists and turns that it soon became obvious that I had no idea.

Which character – as performed by Angela Dawe – was your favorite?

Angela Dawe is one of my favourite narrators and this book would be one of her best. Her characterisation of Kathleen Turner was amazing - I felt like I was part of the book and part of the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't have an extreme reaction to the book but I really enjoyed both the suspense and the humor and I think this was due both to Tiffany Snow's excellent writing and Angela Dawe's expressive narration.

    Any additional comments?

I was looking out for a new author and series to follow and Tiffany Snow fits the bill very nicely.

Although a bit elementary, it was sexy, fun and I downloaded the audio version so I listened while commuting and the reader had a perfect voice for the lovely Kat.

    "Addictive!"

Ok, this book and series was a guilty pleasure!
Still, some moments or comments were worthy of a few or many eye-rolls, and by the end of the series I was really tired of the author using violence (subjected at heroine) at every turn, with no other written consequence save for a man's rage at failing to protect (even when not in same city) and seeking to give a little TLC which was almost never graciously accepted. And come on! Whatever she gets done to her she takes 2 aspirins and sleeps it off? WTF? At one point in the series she gets run over by a car! Also, the heroine is kinda stupid at times.
And her man is supposed to be a high-ranking political magnate, but is able to start a shoot-out in the middle of the street, using concealed weapons and no one notices? Really? Shouldn't he be busy doing political stuff somewhere? Didn't know governors or senators had so much time on their hands or so much privacy...
Still... even with all the bad, I have to admit the series was addicting. I dunno why I kept going back to it and even read the whole series in a week, loving the last book the best. Yes, even with the eye-roll causing momentary stupidity or tantrums, and too over-bearing (sometimes stupid too) men.
Won't spoil it for you and tell you whom she ends up with...

What made the experience of listening to No Turning Back the most enjoyable?

Angela Dawes male voice is yummy. Yes you do have to get use to her female reading voice, but she has a full range of voices and does a good job. I own tons of her reads. Try her Nora Roberts, MacGregor series. Yum

What did you like best about this story?

Kade starts out in a small role as grows as the series does. Watch for his sarcastic phases as they make you smile with a grin! Blaine is yum! This is a light read romantic/mystery series. Nothing too heavy and keeps you listening and entertained. For the price it is good entertainment. This is a great buy for all 5 books on the 50% sale!

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Kade calls Kathleen "Princess" when all is reveled. Our heroine is NOT the overt strong type, but a mixture of soft, sweet but determined not to be pushed around. Yes, this type of heroine can get on your nerves if you are a strong woman that brooks no nonsense.

    Any additional comments?

I own all the series but made the mistake of listening to book #4 first as Kade is my fave. Now I am starting to listen from book#1, which I find I should have as it does set the stage for the rest of the series.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I really don't like the heroine in this story. Author describes her as a cop's daughter, but she makes the weirdest choices, and falls for her handsome boss-- but also likes his brother! Nothing gets resolved here. Author seems to be trying to follow in the line of Janet Evanovich books -- but doesn't quite make it

    "Fun romantic escapism...."

I would pigeon hole this as a romantic thriller, I have to come write out and say it, I enjoyed it, I didn't care about the ludicrous coincidences, it's written well with fun and flair, with entertaining narration by Angela Dawe.
Life has not been too great for Kat, she's had to give up a lot in the past now it's time to get her life on track, even if that means being on the bottom of the corporate ladder. Kat works two jobs, a runner in a prestigious law firm, her boss being the witch from hell and a bar maid in the evening in a busy pub, where skimpy costumes seem obligatory.
Throw in two alpha males, a murdered prostitute, electoral fraud and some very powerful enemies it becomes apparent that no-one is really telling her the truth.
Stupidly naive she has a steep learning curve, but she's like a dog with a bone and no matter the cost will get to the bottom of her friends murder.
Worth the credit to escape for a few hours.
