Publisher's summary

LAPD Detective Harry Bosch is off the chain in the fastest, fiercest, and highest-stakes case of his life.

Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Bosch has known for years. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Bosch hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer. The world Bosch steps into next is unknown territory. He brings in a detective from the Asian Gang Unit for help with translation - not just of languages but also of the cultural norms and expectations that guided Li's life. He uncovers a link to a Hong Kong triad, a lethal and far-reaching crime ring that follows many immigrants to their new lives in the U.S. And instantly his world explodes.

The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost. In a place known as Nine Dragons, as the city's Hungry Ghosts festival burns around him, Bosch puts aside everything he knows and risks everything he has in a desperate bid to outmatch the triad's ferocity.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Connelly does it again

Unpredictable, but every twist and turn is plausible and works.

Goodbye Harry

What did you love best about Nine Dragons?

This is I guess, the last of the Heironymous Bosch series. And what a blaze of glory. Harry travels to Hong Kong hot on the trail of a murderist Chinese triad. Desparately trying to undo the mortal danger his job has inflicted on his broken family.
As we have come to expect, Harry stays three steps ahead of the law enforcement teams he deals with, and two steps behind the bad guys but closing rapidly. The plot twists and turns thru the dark roads of Hong Kong, and the shimmering freeways of southern California.
This is NOT the Harry Bosch to read. Mights well start at or near the beginning with the Black books. This is the BEST DETECTIVE series in print. The depth of character is unparalleled, the cast becomes family to the reader. In an age of two dimensional macho vigilantees, Harry stands head and shoulders above the crowd. His cool is a wonderful lesson for those of us who learn from our libraries.
This series is so better than some new age self help course. It instructs the male persona in maturity, patience, and lightning fast action when it is called for. Single parent moms would benefit greatly when dealing with their adolescent sons from the lessons and style of Harry Bosch. Timeless gratitude to the author.

Who was your favorite character and why?

HARRY, HARRY, HARRY. enuf said above.

What does Len Cariou bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The ability to multi-task while hearing the best literature available.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. savoring is my bag. Imhated tomfinish it.

I really enjoy the Bosch series but….

Great rendering of a crime with Harry in pursuit. Obviously it goes sideways fantastically in Hong Kong. Just wasn’t a fan of that. Looking forward to the next one.

Outstanding!!!

I love the Bosch series both books and the show but man this one was amazing! The narrator really outdid himself and the storyline was one of my favs so far. Great job not getting stale after so many books on the same character.

Too whimsical.

Micheal Connelly is usually more methodical in detail and believable in his story lines. I hate to say it, but this book was farcical.

Okay but not up to Bosch standards

I never got into this one. I was really eager to start it and the story was interesting but something was gone from the old Harry Bosch. He actually gets along with his boss in this book which is the first time I believe. THe Chinese dialogue by the narrator was not very good. That I believe was the main problem I had with the book. Since it is Connelly and Bosch I would recommend it, but to me it was not the usual Connelly "couldn't put down" quality.

Book 3 stars, narrator minus 1!

The story was just OK for me, a real stretch in places. If you are a fan of Connelly's Harry Bosch character, I am sure you will enjoy this book. It definitely had a couple of good plot twists. But Len Cariou is just awful as Bosch. At times, actually most of the time he narrates as if the listener is a complete idiot. His attempt at female voices was so bad I actually skipped over that section so I wouldn't have to listen to it.

WOW!

I have read all of M. Connelly's books. This one gives you an intricate and nicely developed who-done-it plot with realistic emotional intensity. Guilt, remorse, redemption-it was gut wrenching for me. I listened to J. Kellerman's "Evidence" last week. It was horrid and I used to be a big Alex Delaware fan. Connelly now surpasses Kellerman in all areas including psycological aspects of the novel. By the way, I am a clinical psychogist-40 years including forensics and police consultation. Connelly is my favorite.
