Publisher's summary

Cam Richter, needing a break from his too eventful detective career, is in search of more peaceful pastures in the North Carolina countryside. He buys a 700-acre antebellum plantation, the perfect location for restful solitude, but it doesn't take long for him to discover that his new locale is not as quiet as he'd hoped.

Almost immediately, Cam finds himself caught up in mischievous pranks around his land, the site of a Civil War-era massacre. When the pranks turn hostile, however, he realizes he's been targeted by a killer who holds him responsible for something Cam is pretty sure he never did. As he tries to find out why someone wants him dead, he begins to uncover the secrets of his plantation and how the land's tragic history is still tangled up in the present.

Cam will need all of his resources, including his redoubtable German shepherd companions, to stay alive as he deals with a determined stalker, some very eccentric people, and all the entanglements of a place suddenly alive with secrets and the fruits of a bloody past.

Change of pace for Cam via small Confederate town

I very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I like to start with the first in a series and read straight through so after Cat Dancers I immediately went to Spider Mountain. Both were enjoyable, especially the dogs. Then Moonpool, which I do NOT recommend and suggest you skip entirely. The story is confusing and, in my opinion, badly written. It's only redeeming quality is the dogs. And I've just finished Nightwalkers, I liked it as well and will buy the next in the series when I find it. All that said, I always like Dick Hill and although his "female voices" are sometimes a bit like nails on a blackboard, he is one of the best!

Better then Moonpool

This 4th book in the series is great, better then Moonpool which was a little disappointing.

If you haven't started this series begin with 'The Cat Dancers' which is a great cop / suspense novel.

Disappointing

I like Duetermann. I like Dick Hill. I did not like this book and did not like this narration. The previous combination of this author and narrator worked well but this one was just plain disappointing.

Not for listening in noisy places

Dick Hill uses vocal dynamics - and his voice disappears when we play his reads in the car. Deutermann's stories are fun and complex, and it is a shame I can't enjoy the reading.

Another Winner for PT and Cam....

Just discovered Deutermann a few weeks ago and have now read the 4-book Cam Richter series. More please! Being in North Carolina I enjoy his NC settings for all four. Pretty easy to guess his locales.

With Dick Hill's voice, its easy to compare Richter to Reacher.... if Reacher had Frick and Frack (and Kitty). Yes, there is a formula to the series.... nothing wrong with that. MUST read in order - Cat Dancers, Spider Mountain, Moonpool then this one. Now I will be reading Deutermann's non-Richter stories. Suggest you do too!

A Creditable Entry

I've been a Deutermann fan since his first novel, The Edge of Honor. This was a good Cam Richter story, much, much better than Spider Mountain, which required way too much disbelief. Particularly compelling was his depiction of folks still living in the old old(!) South, and his portrayal of the subtleties of small-town politics.

This is a fun read with a great twist, as can be expected from Deutermann.

this was a good book

this is the second book that we have tried of PT Deutermann and it was not disappointing at all, the first book was more fast past yet this was fun and intriguing at the same time the plot was different and that made it nice also, I gave this five stars for a reason I am from CA so the hole south thing is a change for me and that made it more fun the good old boy thing.. and the way things are done was interesting to me.. and I loved the who was really trying to kill who...and the Dog aspect was interesting and i liked that part of the plot allot also. we liked this book i hope you give it a try it is long but fun,
Heather

Very enjoyable story and history

I really enjoyed the story and the history of this book. The main character is not only interesting but very human in the decisions and mistakes he makes. Only negative thing was a chapter late in the book was flipped with another that made things confusing. Highly recommend this book.
