Editorial reviews

Amanda Ronconi narrates this humorous mystery with the vocal equivalent of an eye roll. While she doesn’t sound bored, she certainly sounds annoyed. But imagine her character’s predicament: She’s purchased an old crumbling Victorian on the Jersey shore, she’s fixing it up into a guesthouse, her precocious nine-year-old is hectoring, and now she finds out the Victorian is haunted!

Admittedly contrived, over-the-top, and including references that will be dated unto obscurity within the next decade or sooner, Night of the Living Deed seeks to achieve only one thing: Your temporary laughter and merriment at - or with - Ronconi’s eye-rolling voice.

Publisher's summary

Welcome to the first Haunted Guest House mystery - the getaway every reader can afford.

Newly divorced Alison Kerby wants a second chance for herself and her nine-year-old daughter. She's returned to her hometown on the Jersey Shore to transform a Victorian fixer-upper into a charming-and profitable guest house. One small problem: the house is haunted, and the two ghosts insist Alison must find out who killed them.

I've Found a Great New Series!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, I was very sad to have finished the Half-Moon Hallow Series and was looking for something new to listen to. This book is great. I have long been a fan of Amanda Ronconi. This is her best work yet as a narrator. She nailed the New Jersey accent, especially in the character Phyllis.
This book is funny, light, scary, suspenseful and clean. All things I look for in a story. It is well-written and has delightful characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Night of the Living Deed?

This book is full of memorable moments. My favorites are when the developer's secretary confesses to Alison, when Maxi gets to talk to her mother, when Alison first sees the ghosts, and the showdown in the cemetery. It really is a well-written book.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Maxi shaves off Melissa's eyebrows. That is hands down the funniest scene in the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Maxi's mother admits that she not only loved her daughter but liked her. She shares that she misses her deeply and did not sell the house because Maxi wouldn't have wanted it. It is a poignant scene that is done perfectly.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book. I am going to listen to the whole series.

paranormal whodunit

Easy on the paranormal as seen through the eyes of a skeptic turned "have to believer." Light easy story that is easy to follow, the story is more about the character than the mystery but that's what makes you want to read/listen to the others.

Delightfully surprised!

I picked this up as an Audible Daily Deal, and kept it on my iPod for weeks while I listened to other, "serious" literature. I occasionally like to indulge in a fluffy "cozy" mystery, both in print and on audio, but I've come to expect little of them, and have learned to overlook their common flaws in grammar, plot points and the like. Character development in generally key in the genre, and I wasn't anticipating anything more from this one. Plus, I love a good ghost story, and it's been a while - at least this one seemed to feature no zombies, vampires or werewolves, for a refreshing change!

It took about an hour of listening before I realized I had stumbled on to a lovely gem. Initially, I thought Amanda Ronconi's narration was amateurish, but in short time I came to know she was the perfect voice for self-deprecating, youthful and amateurish Alison Kerby. As a former New Jerseyan, I love her authentic characterizations of the numerous people in the story, too.

The novel moves quickly, is family-friendly, for those who might want to recommend a murder mystery/ghost story to a young or preteen, and is filled with laugh-out-loud moments. I came back to Audible today hoping to find more offerings from the same author, and was thrilled to find numerous books already available in the series. I'm putting them all on my wish list! Thank you, E. J. Copperman!

LOVED this series

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this series... The characters each have their own quirks that you grow to love and become endeared to in your listening. I recommended the series to my Mom (which I don't always do) and she has also enjoyed listening to the characters in their search for the answers.
