Publisher's summary

A Sunday Times best seller

The gripping Dirk Pitt classic from multimillion-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.

May 1914. Two diplomats hurry home by sea and rail, each carrying a document of world-changing importance. Then the liner Empress of India is sunk in a collision, and the Manhattan-Line express plunges from a bridge - both dragging their VIP passengers to watery oblivion. Tragic coincidence or conspiracy?

In the energy-starved, fear-torn 1980s, Dirk Pitt discovers that those long-lost papers could destroy whole nations, throwing him into his biggest challenge yet. Racing against hired killers, he launches his revolutionary deep-sea search craft and faces the horrors of the sea bed to hunt for the documents. 'Night Probe' has begun....

An old favorite that still holds up

This was the first novel I ever read from the Grandmaster of fiction. After fifteen years, it’s still as good as I remember, though I would say they could’ve merged or cutout some of the parts that delved into the past. Overall though, a great story that I hope will get the Reacher treatment some and concludes with a shot of the Manhattan Limited properly rescued and restored for excursion service!

Dirk Pitt vs James Bond (kinda)

The problem with writing stories taking place a decade in the future is that the writer can't take really big swings with predictions. Clive Cussler apparently never heard this writing "rule". This novel is hip deep in French Canadian separatists plotting the separation of Quebec from English speaking Canada. Throw in the US government declaring bankruptcy and an energy crisis that never got better in the 70's, and you get a glimpse of the landscape. Add in a retired British secret agent whose history sounds a LOT like a certain Ian Fleming hero sent to stop Dirk Pitt from finding a lost treaty that will rewrite all the world maps and you should have an idea of what you are in for. Is it a crazy story? Pretty much. Is it a fun read? Also, Yes. I have believed from the start of the series that Dirk Pitt was an Americanized James Bond, so this meeting had to happen. If you don't mind letting the author's imagination run away with you, you will have a good time.

Not a very dramatic story

Typical story line…a bad guy who is so deadly and so trained that he not only is a militia expert he also can somehow make himself look identical to a politician that even his wife didn’t know?
Ask any woman and they will tell you there is no way a foreign person would make love identical to their real husband…Cussler made a habit of painting his characters too good, or evil as needed…but of course only until Dirk can somehow see thru the fake bad guy…again very predictable and far fetched.

Second time thru Night Probe

I am getting more from this series the second time thru. I remembered the sections about the train and its mystery but not so much of the North American treaty and its implications. The whole book has been very good.

Could be the best of the series!

Night Probe! could very well be my favorite, Dirk Pitt series book. I really enjoyed the character development of the other players in the book and their interactions. I love the interesting story lines and how they were mergeed .I did not know how they would tie those in until close to the end. I would highly recommend this book. Please give it a shot.

Enjoying These Early Titles

I am enjoying listening to all the older titles now. I’ve read the first three in book form years (decades??) ago. For some reason I couldn’t engage in this story until it was about 1/2 way done. Not sure if it was the characters or subject.
I like listening to these and seeing in my mind how Pitt et al have matured into the more current societal mores in the newer books. We were different people then too.
Really love Scott Brick’s narrative style and characterization. Great voice!!
I miss more of the camaraderie between Pitt & Geordino as Al has a more minor role in these early books.
If you like the modern novels give these older ones a listen.

Another good story

Loved the varied storylines.

Some of the context is clearly older, some of which probably wouldn’t be appropriate today.

One of my favorites!

I’ve been listening to the Dirk Pitt series when it was on Audio Cassettes through the CD years and finally on digital audio. Night Probe is one of my favorites and I’m glad it’s finally on Audible. There’s only one thing I can’t fathom, why someone’s enjoyment of the story soured on the last paragraph.
It’s a classic Dirk Pitt story filled with suspense and adventure under the seas!
