Publisher's summary

The stunning new thriller - the 20th Doc Ford novel - from New York Times best-selling author Randy Wayne White.

Both Doc Ford and his friend Tomlinson have buried secrets. Now one of those secrets is about to come alive - with a vengeance.

While trying to solve one of Florida's most profound secrets, Doc Ford is the target of a murder attempt by someone who wants to make it look like an accident. Or is the target actually Tomlinson? Whatever the answer, the liveaboards and fishing guides at Dinkin's Bay on Sanibel Island are becoming increasingly nervous - and wary - after a near-poisoning, a plane crash, and an explosion make it apparent that Ford and Tomlinson are dangerous companions.

What their small family of friends don’t know is that their secret pasts make it impossible for the two of them to go to the law for help. There is an assassin on the loose, and it is up to them to find the killer - before he (or she) finishes the job.

Critic reviews

"Over his last several Doc Ford novels, White has vaulted to mainstream bestseller status. This one is likely to maintain the pattern." (Booklist)

"Captivating...[an] intriguing installment." (Publishers Weekly)

"White weaves in and out of the two mysteries - the murder attempt and Flight 19 - telling the story with the same tight, vivid prose his fans have come to expect. The result is another strong addition to one of crime fiction’s most consistent series." (Associated Press)

What happened to the lean, mean Doc Ford?

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Just loved Doc more in the early days.
Characters seem a bit disjointed( no pun intended),
and Doc doesn't seem to have the same
joie de vivre.

If you’ve listened to books by Randy Wayne White before, how does this one compare?

Early books the absolute best.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of George Guidall?

As much as I love George Guidal, I was shocked that the producer or even
Mr. Guidal himself, would not have taken the time to find out how some
words " down here " are actually pronounced!
For those of us who live in the area or even for those who visit,
99.9 % know how Sanibel, Boca Grande, and even the word Tarpon!,
would be pronounced by the locals, and that certainly would include Doc Ford!!
I don't assume RRW ever listened to this one or he
would have had to get out his secret box.
I am sorry, but the chronic mispronunciations ruined the book for me, and
I could not finish listening.

Pretty good, but the narration was off

Any additional comments?

So I've read almost all of the Doc. Ford book Series. The narrator is the same for almost all of the books. For some reason, Tomlinson's voice is a bit different in this book than all of the rest. I've gotten so used to the narrator's representation of my favorite hippie's voice, that I found the change very distracting in this book.

With that negative out of the way, overall the book was really good. As with almost the entire series, I can't seem to put it down, and I seem to always finish the books in only a few car rides. In this case, I was visiting Seattle and Portland. I don't remember much of the car ride or trip, but I remember the book! I like Hannah enough, that I am looking forward to the next Doc. Ford book, but to quench my thirst for more, I may have to start reading the Hannah series now.

No coherent story line

What did you like best about Night Moves? What did you like least?

I liked the dog. But now I don't understand why he was even in the story.
doc returns, dog is gone, end of story. Not that there was one.

Would you be willing to try another book from Randy Wayne White? Why or why not?

Yes, but not with my original enthusiasm

Which scene was your favorite?

None really stand out.

Could you see Night Moves being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No!

Any additional comments?

As I said, there is no real story line in this book. It's a bunch of raggedly connected vignettes at best. Save your $$

Good but not great.

Doc is always a good story, but this had a lot of smaller stories that were Loosely linked together.

Narrators voice too old

I enjoyed the story. Tomlinson and Ford have become some of my favourite characters. I did not like the reader of this story though. Ford is apparently 40-ish? But the narrator sounded like a sixty year old. Was distracting.

another great Doc Ford book

Doc Ford is just good stuff to listen too. Marian seems to be developing a very interesting new friend that will provide Randy some new material to explore.
I had the chance to go to a book signing and hear Randy talk, he is well worth the time.

My favorite Doc Ford

This book has multiple intersecting stories as all the Doc Ford Novels do. Here they augment and complement each other perfectly, and they modulate between suspenseful, funny, and interesting. We meet the the snake-slayer dog, Pete, and the final Hannah Smith. We learn about the Avengers and the Bermuda triangle. And Doc gets a frenemy, an undercover assassin who is cooler, slimmer, richer—deadlier. It is a great book to listen to as well as read. I got used to the narrator after a while, though he does not sound like Doc would sound. He changes voice for different characters well.

Classic Doc Ford

Classic Doc Ford story. The narrator was great minus not pronouncing things and places the way native Floridians would.
