Publisher's summary

Based on true events, but unlike anything you've ever heard before, number-one New York Times best-selling author Nelson DeMille has created what may be his finest work to date.

At dusk on July 17, 1996, on a deserted Long Island beach, a man and a woman engage in adulterous sex in front of a video camera. Suddenly a terrible blast lights up the dark summer sky. TWA Flight 800 has just exploded in midair with 230 souls onboard, and the video camera has recorded the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Five years later the government has declared the crash a result of mechanical failure. But John Corey, an ex-NYPD detective who is now a contract agent with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is persuaded by Kate Mayfield, his wife and task force partner, that the case deserves a second look.

Kate, a career FBI agent, plays by the rules. Corey plays by no rules but his own. Against long odds and warnings from their superiors, they set out to reopen the case and discover its most crucial piece of evidence. The hunt will lead to a conspiracy at the highest levels and a race toward an elusive and lethal truth that could be even more horrifying than the crash of Flight 800, one with unimaginable consequences for America...and the world.

Probably my favorite John Corey book

Corey is a great character. Hilarious at times, relentless all the time. This book was fantastic. Scott Brick seems like he has totally nailed the personality of John Corey.
I like the realistic story, the humor, and great action. Lots of fun.

Couldn't stop listening

After a somewhat slow start this book really picks up the pace quickly. Though the ending was somewhat predicable, it is a "great listen".

Another great book by Nelson DeMille

The third book in the series by Nelson DeMille, which contenues to please. The books provides an interesting conspiracy theory to the TWA crash. The plot is full of twists and overall a great listen. The ending was an easy way out for the author.

Relentless page-turner with an unfortunate ending

I really like all the novels featuring John Corey and this one is another winner. The storyline steadily builds and holds interest right up to the end. Corey's character freely exhibits his sarcastic wit combined with an outspoken don't hold back nature, and a tenacious pursuit of his detective instincts makes every page entertaining. I also like the sharing his cynical thoughts throughout the story.

This book does an excellent job of blending facts with fiction thoughout the plot about TWA Flight 800.

As much as I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I would have preferred to give this book a 5-star rating except for two unfortunate items. One was the unnecessary detail of the, albeit short, sex scenes. The other and more disturbing issue was what I felt was an unwarranted and dubious ending to the book. I felt cheated after moving continuously to the edge of my seat building up to the final climax. It is unfortunate that the author took the easy way out instead of writing a finish that is commensurate with his world class talent.

One last point; at first I thought the narrator had a clothespin over his nose as he read the novel. His voice just didn't seem to fit the John Corey I was thinking of. I did get used to it however and all is well.

Great novel

Really enjoyed the book. Yes, the ending is abrupt, but if you hear the interview with the author following the ending of the book you will understand that even though this novel is based on fact, there are still lots of unanswered questions about what really happened to the flight. That being said, the author expects you to come up with your own ending. As others have said, there is a lot of swearing, but hey, that's John Corey for you.

Good story, very engaging.

DeMille is one of my favorite writers. I have loved a lot of his books. I did not love this as much as some. I felt it left you hanging in the end more than I would have liked. I wouldn't have it more resolved, but I realize that with what he was working with it was impossible. Nonetheless, it was somewhat disappointing.

Great meld of actual and fiction

Night Fall blends what actually happened and fiction seamlessly with sensitivity. As always, Scott Brick does an excellent job as narrator.

Was not disappointed

I found Night Fall very enjoyable and what I have come to expect from Nelson DeMille. I was a little concerned when I read some of the reviews, particularly those who expressed disappointment with the ending. While I admit that it was not the ending I expected, I think it was a good ending nonetheless. I felt as stunned when I reached it as I was at the time. Please forgive the ambiguity, but I would not want to spoil the ending for anyone else. The only thing that I disliked was the increased number of F-bombs as. compared with The Lion's Game. I would estimate that about 2/3 were unnecessary as the author is neither suffering from dementia or a closed head injury, nor is he a juvenile which is what I usually associate with the excess of such expletives. Scott Brick was masterful, as usual. Overall, Night Fall is worth the credit and I know I shall listen to it again.
