Publisher's summary

Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blondes becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes; is that why an adult human being resembles a chimp fetus? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction - is it worse than the disease?

We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps; a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars or test our spouses for genetic maladies. We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes.

Devilishly clever, Next blends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn. Next challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing, Next shatters our assumptions and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect.

The future is closer than you think. Get used to it.

A book that will make you think

This book was definitely one that will make you think and stay with you for a long time. The narrator was great!

I had to turn the volume down on this one.

I have enjoyed MC's books over the years. They have been entertaining, educational, and thought-provoking. This is the first time that I have had to turn the volume down on one of his books. I can't listed to it around my child. I know, a certain amount of foul language is to be expected in a novel these days; however, hearing MC resort to F*** over (AND OVER) was disappointing. In addition, it seems that he added a dash of explict sex that served no purpose except for providing shock value. In Disclosure the sex was acceptable because it furthered the plot.

With that said, I did enjoyed the story. Just pretend that someone else wrote it!

    good story.difficult narration

I always enjoy Michael Crichton's books. He weaves so much scientific knowledge into his novels. You can enjoy the story while learning so much. The narration made this more difficult to get through... overly dramatic voices ranging from nasal to whinny and all the women sound like cackling crows. Worth getting to the end for the author interview which is amazingly relevant to current circumstances in 2020/2021.

    Crichton always makes you think

Narration was very even thoughout. Story engaging, but sometimes connections difficult to keep clear. Thanks

OK, but not the Michael Crichton I was seeking.

Just rather disappointed in this particular book. But, I am still a Michael Crichton fan.

    Not Classic Crichton

Story seemed like it was all over the place. Didn't like the liberal use of the "f" word.

    Interesting premise. Average book.

Idea is interesting...as it usually is with this author. However, the book is thin and the characters are one-dimentional at best. In addition, the narrator is weak. He makes most of the characters sound whiney. I'd recommend another choice.

    It's was ok

I felt like I've heard this story several times before. It wasn't bad but it wasn't his best work either.

    interesting

I found the topic interesting. the story is more of a vehicle to convey a message, the dangers of DNA and cellular research commercialization
