It was one of Eve Dallas’s earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he’s not behind bars anymore.

After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind. One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent - when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes. His other goal: to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago, now a high-profile lieutenant in the NYPSD and married to one of the city’s richest men.

Commanding Eve’s attention with a chilling and brazen crime, McQueen sets off the chase - forcing Eve down a road marked with blood and tears, a road that eventually leads southwest to Dallas, Texas, the home Eve fled long ago. And each new twist brings her closer to the harrowing memory of when she wasn’t a hardened detective but a vulnerable girl just like McQueen’s innocent prey. As her husband, Roarke, tries to rescue her from the nightmares that claw at her mind, and her partner, Peabody, doggedly works to support her, Eve must confront - and call upon - the darkest parts of her own soul in order to survive.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

Wow!

Wow - another amazing installment in this amazing series. In this one we get to see Peabody grow into her own as a detective and we see Eve continue her emotional growth and contentment with her life with Roarke. The bad guys in this book are very dirty cops and it was great seeing the regular cast of characters all work together to take down the bad cops.

It matters not, which of the 40 some odd books...

I liked all of them and I would probably listen to 40 more. JD Robb is astounding. I love her characters, Eve is the best, but I treasure each one of them. My concern is how will I continue to live after this series is over? I am nearing the end now. Before I started this, I downloaded number 37 or something in that range due to an Audible sale. Now, 35 books later, I can't believe that I made it to the point where I am worried about running out, Peabody is my friend. I keep thinking she's real and Eve too! I think I could listen to them again? Is that a viable option? Please submit your suggestions and I will read them with all of the desperation that I feel. I've read two authors that I like this much. If you tell me who my next author is, I will tell you who the equal to Robb is.

When will it ever end????

Would you try another book from J. D. Robb and/or Susan Ericksen?

Only by mistake. This is definitely a book that would have been better in an abridged version.

Eve Dallas Strikes Again

I really like the Eve Dallas series. I would never have expected to enjoy a futuristic detective novel, but J D Robb makes the conveniences of the future like ordering a Starbucks coffee every day. In this book, Eve returns to her past, at least in her mind, and in some fashion, reconciles what happened to her at age 6 with her life today. It helps that she has a millionaire husband who has enough money to satisfy her every desire, but that simply makes things easier for her, not more extravagant. She is not a spoiled rich wife, but a serious police detective accompanied by her somewhat serious side-kick, Peabody. This book is a good read with a great narrator.

Eve Dallas does it again

I seem to always return to this series. Narration is spot on and storyline melds together with easy flow.

Implausible tale, overuse of "Irish" accent

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing ... the story line was barely entertaining, there was too much emotive dialogue and angst, and the narration - especially the "Irish" accent - was only tolerable.

What could J. D. Robb have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Draft a better story line, eliminate about a third of the angst (yea, Eve Dallas had a tough childhood, but the story obsessed over it so much that her qualifications as a detective were seriously questionable.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Stay in character ... there were times when Eve Dallas spoke in an Irish accent when the narrator had to switch between her and Roark.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Fatigue.

The best Eve Dallas book

This book takes Eve back to her roots in the best story in the series. She battles an evil criminal as well as her past.

Save your time and credit

A totally sappy and absurd, endless story. The narrator was way over dramatic, the relationships ridiculous, and the "love story" part particularly nauseating. I will never again read or listen to a book written by J D Robb and will try to avoid books narrated by Susan Ericksen.
