Publisher's summary

Captured on closed-circuit television: A man walks into an Oslo bank, puts a gun to a cashier’s head, and tells her to count to 25. When he doesn’t get his money fast enough, he pulls the trigger. The young woman dies—and two million Norwegian kroner disappear without a trace.

After a drunken evening with his former girlfriend, Anna Bethsen, Police Detective Harry Hole wakes up at home with a headache, no cell phone, and no memory of the past 12 hours. That same day, Anna is found shot dead in her bedroom, making Hole a prime suspect in an investigation led by his hated adversary, Tom Waaler.

Meanwhile, the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery, sending rogue detective Hole from the streets of Oslo to steaming Brazil in a race to close two cases and clear his name. But Waaler isn’t finished with his longtime nemesis quite yet.

Critic reviews

"Nesbo manages the unlikely feat of exploring the inner life of his lead character in the thorough and compelling manner one associates with, say, Ruth Rendell, while at the same time juggling multiple, interlocking plot strands as dexterously as David Hewson. No doubt about it: Nesbo belongs on every crime-fiction fan’s A-list." ( Booklist)

Tragic Mis-Match

Thor Knai has a clear, monotonous voice. It doesn’t work for Nesbo’s works. Neither does a southern accent for Møller. Who thought that was a good idea?!

Don't listen to the negative narrator reviews

Please do not listen to the negative narrator reviews or you'll be missing a great book. I agree the narration by Thor Knai is poor but after about an hour you get used to him. In fact I found a couple of his accents pretty hilarious. At one time he comes out with an attempt at a Norweign accent that sounds like the Kentucky hills. The book is a great listen however and Jo Nesbo is at his best. The plot is typical Nesbo with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end.

Both intriguing and gripping

Jo Nesbo can certainly weave a complex tale in his thriller series featuring police offer Harry Hole. I love the narrator Thor Knai who is much better than the choice that was made for the 1st, 3rd and 4th books narrator. Interestingly the lead Character Harry Hole (pronounced Harry Hula) name is then mispronounced by the English narrator in the other books. I much prefer the european accented Thor Knai. Nevertheless, Nesbo is a great author who has developed a complex and not always likeable character in Harry Hole. His plots will definitely keep you guessing.

The narration is fine

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Don't let the whining about the performance keep you away. I thought he was quite good.

First Nesbo disappointment. Bad narration.

The story is up to Nesbo's standards, but the narrator keeps getting in the way. I was hoping I could adjust, and I did, but definitely detracted from my enjoyment.

Preaching to the Choir

What made the experience of listening to Nemesis the most enjoyable?

Tuning out the narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Thor Knai’s performances?

Not in this life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried with disappointment at burning an entire credit, my last one, on this.

Any additional comments?

Only use narrators that 1. approximate the age and style of the key character, 2. Can do effective voices of the opposite sex 3. Have some emotion about the story they are reading.4.Have acting experience with other character types.

Enjoyable entry

Harry Hole is a great character and this is a solid installment. I did find one of the two mystery plots a little predictable. Waiting for the reveal became a bit of a bummer, but it was still good, and I look forward to the next one.

Horrible narration - Great plot

The narration is terrible. I almost returned it because of his flat, monotone narration. I was determined to move forward with the story, and that was the only reason I finished it.

Story wise, Nesbø continues to deliver in this fourth installment of the series.
