Publisher's summary

Captured on closed-circuit television: A man walks into an Oslo bank, puts a gun to a cashier’s head, and tells her to count to 25. When he doesn’t get his money fast enough, he pulls the trigger. The young woman dies—and two million Norwegian kroner disappear without a trace.

After a drunken evening with his former girlfriend, Anna Bethsen, Police Detective Harry Hole wakes up at home with a headache, no cell phone, and no memory of the past 12 hours. That same day, Anna is found shot dead in her bedroom, making Hole a prime suspect in an investigation led by his hated adversary, Tom Waaler.

Meanwhile, the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery, sending rogue detective Hole from the streets of Oslo to steaming Brazil in a race to close two cases and clear his name. But Waaler isn’t finished with his longtime nemesis quite yet.

Critic reviews

"Nesbo manages the unlikely feat of exploring the inner life of his lead character in the thorough and compelling manner one associates with, say, Ruth Rendell, while at the same time juggling multiple, interlocking plot strands as dexterously as David Hewson. No doubt about it: Nesbo belongs on every crime-fiction fan’s A-list." ( Booklist)

Great narrator, great book

Thor Knai does a great job narrating - I really liked him better than Sachs. Storyline and characters are compelling, as usual. Definitely recommend.

Excellent story. Lots of twists.

Great story. Tons of character development. An amazing number of plot twists but it doesn’t leave any stone unturned.

Complicated case

You have to pay close attention, story has multiple lines and lot of characters.

Harry is gr8 and I loved H. Poirot like reveal of the events and guilty party.

I have also enjoyed how Harry’s private life evolves.

WORST NARRATOR EVER, RUINED THE BOOK

Thor Knai's voice, timing and his attempt at accents were so bad I returned the book. Sorry Harry I'll catch you in the next book which I see has Saul reading again.
THE ONLY REASON PERFORMANCE HAS 1 STAR, IS AUDIBLE WON'T ALLOW A REVIEW WITHOUT RATING ALL 3 AREAS

Just okay...

The mystery, the characters, the whole thing was just okay. Nothing stood out. This is my 2nd Nesbo book. I'll probably just stick to buying him if the books are on sale.

Narrator felt clunky, but was fine.

So-so plot; terrible narrator

No comparison with the narrator of The Redbreast: these two are from different planets.

Knai
1) speeds the narration with a monotonous tone
2) only occasionally pronounces Norwegian place and character names properly
3) doesn't pause between scenes within a chapter, so you're wondering why one scene is suddenly in a different setting
4) has such a bad effect on the novel that I lost interest in the details of the storyline and only continued listening because I knew the next novel would assume the reader had read this one.

Great story, poor narrator

When you’re used to Robin Sachs, this guy didn’t even come close and was really annoying at times

Good book and narrator

I like the entire Harry Hole series but think Nemesis is one of the my favorites...better and less confusing than The Redbreast. To address the narrator issue that seems to bother so many others: I really appreciated the rather direct presentation without over acting. His narration, from my point of view, is wildly better than John Lee's. Too bad that Thor Knai did not do others. And to add to some other's comments, I also liked his pronunciation of "Hole". Wish other narrators had adopted.
