Natural Law, performed with steamy coyness by Maxine Mitchell, is a dark and disturbing story about a sexy homicide cop, Mac Nighthorse, who goes undercover to hunt the underground BDSM sex haunts to find out which dangerous dominatrix is thrilling her gladly paying customers with arousing pain and erotic torment before....murdering them. Ouch, indeed.
If you enjoy Natural Law, consider watching the similarly plotted film from 1980, Cruising, starring a young Al Pacino at the height of his game.
Mackenzie "Mac" Nighthorse is a highly respected homicide detective and a career cop. There isn't a dangerous situation that can back him down. However, the personal becomes uncomfortably entangled in the professional when he goes undercover in a high class BDSM club as a male submissive in order to find a Dominatrix who is winning the trust and then murdering her chosen partners. When his path crosses Violet Siemanski's, he realizes he's found a Mistress willing to be his ally in finding the murderess. But Violet is also going to shatter Mac's shields and make him question who he is and what he wants, a challenge more disturbing than any case he's ever worked.

Like the romance, but love the action involved to get there!
Wow, just wow! First, let me say that at the time of this review this book is under $4 for a full length book! Then let me say, I would have gladly paid $30 for it!
I will warn you, this IS erotica, the entire book was a dance of emotionally charged getting to know you hot hot hot graphic graphic graphic steam! This book is mostly from the viewpoint of the female Dom Mistress Violet. The author lets you into the Dom's head in what she is thinking and feeling while trying to break in a new sub, Mackenzie. Mac is not a typical sub...he's all alpha male hard ass cop...but he is wired to want to be controlled in the bedroom. He knows in his heart he is a sub, but no Mistress has ever fully broken him and he has never willingly surrendered.
Seeing into the mindset of a Dom was fascinating. Watching this story unfold was riveting! I did feel that the narrator took too many diction lessons...a bit curt with her enunciations but it didn't detract from the story too much. Listening to how a Dom/sub relationship is forged was really enlightening and entertaining. If you like erotica even a little then this should be an automatic download for you. There was passion, chemistry, hot scenes, a murder mystery, and a keep you guessing till the end plot. It had me at minute one! Just hit add to cart!
The fact that more than half the story is about BDSM how to's and why for's (and confusing humiliation with love IMHO) instead of the erotic suspense story I thought I was getting.
Make it a really good romantic erotic murder suspense instead of a BDSM Manual.
I liked the women's voices but no one in particular. Mac sounded more like a 19 yr old than a 40 something hardened Detective.
In all honesty I did learn some things. Granted some I'd rather not know but I did listen to the whole book in hopes there would be something to redeem it for me. Don't waste your time.
I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!
I've read a few BDSM books, but never one that explained it to the degree that this one does. What intrigued me was that the sub was an alpha male, and you don't read about that often. While it did get pretty intense at times, namely on the weekend trip they take, which kind of caught me off guard and I needed to adjust to, it mostly is just really captivating and powerful. Mac doesn't know how to completely let go and allow himself to be vulnerable, even though deep down that is all he really wants. Violet wants nothing more than to form a complete and all-encompassing bond with the right person, where all the walls are down and there is nothing but complete trust and love. Sometimes it feels like she pushed him too far even though she was never violent with him, ahem, the weekend trip, but she clearly gives him the option time and again to say 'no', which is actually the battle she is waging with him, to accept that it is okay to say no, and in the end he is really thankful to her for tearing down his walls. I guess I just feel embarressed for him, even though he doesn't exhibit any signs of regret or embarressment himself. His biggest challenge is to accept that there are boundaries and that does not make you weak; it actually makes you strong to be able to voice them and to trust that your partner will still love you and see your strength. Really Violet fought so hard for this because she saw the danger in never expressing a need to stop; that you can be pushed too far and she feared for him that he wouldn't ever use a safe word. I guess in that light I can understand why she goes to the extremes that she does, knowing that she isn't hurting him, but only helping him, and that he is so incredibly stubborn that he never would have given in to his true desires otherwise. The firt half of the book focuses on the relationship between Violet and Mac, and the second half is more about the criminal case Mac is investigating. The ending- I kind of thought it was who it was, but I wasn't certain. It is definitely one of those books that you think you have figured out, but there are just so many options for the villain. There is great commentary on the lifestyle itself as well, and how the world, as a whole, views and misconceives it. Overall, a great and passionate foray into the BDSM world without feeling like events and scenes happen for the thrill and shock value, though at times I'll admit I was a bit shocked. It's intense, but if you keep an open mind, not think about if you would do it, but why the characters do and what it means in their lives, then I think you will find it is worth a listen.
Maxine Mitchell did a geat job with the delivery of the story.
Sassy dialogue, humor, and a great reader are important to me.
this had a good outline with some new and interesting twists, but author waxed too poetic...I would read poems if I wanted poetry.
no, I like the genre, but this author's execution was way too slow.
this reader has an AKA, I can't place it...not my favorite and I would not buy a listen by this reader again. Weak man's voice. What 6'4" 220 lbs man sounds like young boy. Sounds like Eva Kaminsky, who I do not like unless in the Sullivans only.
the characters were good. Outline good, but fill in of story just did not happen.
this story was on sale....I would not waste a credit on another of this author work unless reader changed and other reviewers gave lots of stars
The story was hot and well written. The narration was a little flat.
I loved the whole series ,This book could have been hotter with the right narrator
But this book is still worth the listen
I don't know if the audio edition is better than the print version. I won't choose another book read by this person.
Maxine Mitchell's reading style is very jerky. She puts puts pauses in the oddest places and it makes it difficult to follow the story.
The Reading Style MA DE ME Dislike The story.
Nurse, mom, loved to read....but now I love to listen. When I retire I hope to hear waves crashing in 1 ear and audible in the other!
This DS story comes from another perspective which was unique but the story was snooze worthy. The sex scenes were very, very hot and steamy, I thought the narrator was so-so. I probably will not listen to any others from this series, there is a lot better out there.
I love to read. I love all genres but romance in particular. The hotter and steamy and sexier book is the more I want to read it.
The twist I was not Expecting
Normally I like an alpha male but this was a good change of pace with sub male dom female.
If all you want to hear is sex, this is the book for you. Very juvenile and not a 50 Shades of Grey if that was the intent.

I've been an avid reader since I was a child. I love different types of writing styles and I am never afraid to try new authors.
I bought this book because it was on sale and I wanted to try a new author. I thought the book was just ok. I couldn't really get into the main characters. It felt like a girl playing a roll that I didn't feel was truly her and a man that I couldn't fully see as a submissive. He didn't feel like a true submissive, especially when he kept trying to assert his dominance. So overall these 2 characters didn't work for me at all. I have not finished the book but maybe someday I can get through the entire book.
Maxine Mitchell did a good job as narrator.
