Publisher's summary

Murphy's Law is the captivating first entry of Rhys Bowen’s New York Times best-selling Molly Murphy series.

Molly Murphy always knew she'd end up in trouble, just as her mother predicted. So, when she commits murder in self-defense, she flees her cherished Ireland, under cover of a false identity, for the anonymous shores of late 19th-century America. When she arrives in New York and sees the welcoming promise of freedom in the Statue of Liberty, Molly begins to breathe easier. But when a man is murdered on Ellis Island, a man Molly was seen arguing with, she becomes a prime suspect in the crime.

If she can't clear her name, Molly will be sent back to Ireland where the gallows await, so using her Irish charm and sharp wit, she escapes Ellis Island and sets out to find the wily killer on her own. Pounding the notorious streets of Hell's Kitchen and the Lower East Side, Molly undertakes a desperate mission to clear her name before her deadly past comes back to haunt her new future.

Light and enjoyable enough

I came to this book from the author’s Royal Spyness series, and the heroines are quite similar. The books are easy and fun and I cared what happened but I did get a bit bored. I have been less satisfied with Lady Georgiana as time has passed, and Molly here is actually more lightweight than Georgie. I will give Book 2 a try, but taking a break first. I need more substance.

The narrator is a perfect delight.

Engaging turn of century mystery

If you have enjoyed Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness mysteries, this series by the same author will not disappoint.

Fabulous!

This book was delightful! It wouldn't have been the same without this narrator. She was brilliant. Loved her accent.

Light and fun

Even though there's the murder mystery, overall the book is light and easy listening. The characters are interesting and I'm ready to listen to the next in the series. :)

Great book!

Great story! Well done narration, but there are digital artifacts in the audio file that make it sound a little less than normal. If the sound were a digital picture, I'd say that I could see a few tiny pixels here and there. You get used to it though. It's not horrible or anything.

Fun Cozy Read

Would you listen to Murphy's Law again? Why?

Probably not - its a fun read but not one to revisit.

Would you be willing to try another book from Rhys Bowen? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I am going to continue this series (Molly Murphy). I also love her Royal Spyness series!

Which character – as performed by Nicola Barber – was your favorite?

Molly was great. I enjoyed all the voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Sure. But again it wasn't one I would move appointments around to do so.

Any additional comments?

A great line of "Cozy" reads!

Cozy mystery

Molly Murphy’s accidentally killed the lord’s son and is now running from that. She meets a woman who is taking her children to America but she can’t accompany them and sends Molly in her stead. Molly gets suspected for a murder on the ship and has to try to clear her name and another person’s name. This was a very interesting mystery and I liked getting to see America in this time era. Also the lovely detective who’s trying to solve the case and has his sights sent on Molly is so much fun. Their banter was great. I look forward to more books with Miss Molly Murphy.

Fine story, terrible reader

If you're going to adopt an Irish accent, you should learn to pronounce the names correctly. Nuala is pronounced "Noola" and the mispronunciation is really, really annoying
