Publisher's summary

When Viktor Palmgren, a powerful Swedish industrialist, is shot during his after-dinner speech in the luxurious Hotel Savoy, it sends a shiver down the spine of the international money markets and puts the tiny town of Malmö on edge. No one can identify the gunman when Martin Beck takes over the scene and finds a web so despicable that it's hard to imagine who wouldn't want Palmgren dead.

Critic reviews

"Lively, stylistically taut...Sjöwall and Wahlöö have changed the genre." (Henning Mankell)

Unexpected

After all of the botched expectations, it was surprisingly the simplest explanation of humanity.

Was a nice break from some of life's greater complications

Blast from the past

Watched several Martin Beck DVD’s years ago and was surprised to see this on offer. The narration was excellent. We’re drawn into Swedish life nearly 50 years ago with hippie-dom, politics, racial and social issues. It’s always interesting to learn about crime and law enforcement in other countries.

Time changes little

Late to these but it’s amazing how little things have changed over the years. If anything, they, the issues that result in murder(s), are more pronounced and visible. Well-written with care. Their works are gems.

Great books!

I've heard about the books in this series but I didn't listen to them until about a year ago. I found them for free on Audible. My library has the Kindle books. The books are over 50 years old but they don't feel old at all! I recommend starting from the beginning with this series.

This story was sad!

As usual the narrator messes up a lot of Swedish words: He says "Mamo" instead of Malmö. Malm is pronounced "Mam".
He lost the "l" in Palmgren as well, he became "Pamgren".

Many words get an extra "e", like Helsingborge. The city is pronounced Helsingborg. The man's name is Broberg but he's called "Braberge"! Kollberg's name is also all wrong! He's called "Karlberge"!

He pronounces all the street names wrong. Street in Swedish is gatan, he says "gaten". Svensson is called Svenssen.

Swedish people don't eat sour milk! They eat filmjölk which is similar to yoghurt!
