Whose plans has the apparently ordinary young woman interfered with? The machinations of the mukhabarat, Syria's dreaded police? The schemes of cutthroat terrorists? Or has she simply gone into hiding?
Masquerading as Amanda Pym's worried aunt, Mrs. Pollifax begins her determined search, slipping through Damascus' crooked streets and colorful, crowded souks, and trekking deep into the desert, hoping that rumor and whispers (which is all she has to go on) will lead her to the truth.

Sharon Williams is good, but she doesn't portray the age of Mrs. Pollifax effectively. It was a bit jarring to go from the elderly woman Barbara Rosenblatt played to such a younger characterization. The story itself is excellent. It could only have been better if Mrs. Pollifax had made a decision in the story that it was going to be her last mission instead of leaving it open.
A 50-something who loves sci-fi, cozy mysteries, thrillers, an occasional romance, and any genre if it is a good story. And especially if it makes me laugh! No vampires or zombies though - these are NOT sci-fi!
Sadly, this is the last of Mrs. Polliax's adventures. Once again this senior citizen outwits the bad guys when no one else can. She has to find a kidnapped American and get her out of Syria. With her usual charm and unexpected karate skills, she accomplishes her mission in her own way. The narrator does a good job, but I prefer Barbara Rosenblat's narration.
I couldn't believe this book was recommended by NPR. Nancy Drew novels have more substance.
Be sure to listen to a sample if you are considering buying this. It was a waste of a credit.
I have enjoyed the Mrs. Pollifax series for years, so when I saw they have come out with the download to CD version I have been updating from Cassettes.
I completely agree with Holly from New Mexico. This book is poorly written, predictable and dull. I purchased it after looking at the reviews. Can't follow that logic anymore.
