Publisher's Summary

Seven weeks ago, a young American woman, Amanda Pym, faced down hijackers on board a flight to the Middle East and saved the lives of more than 200 passengers. In a blaze of celebrity, she stepped off the plane in Damascus and was whisked away in a waiting car. Since then, nothing. The CIA believes she was kidnapped and murdered.

Whose plans has the apparently ordinary young woman interfered with? The machinations of the mukhabarat, Syria's dreaded police? The schemes of cutthroat terrorists? Or has she simply gone into hiding?

Masquerading as Amanda Pym's worried aunt, Mrs. Pollifax begins her determined search, slipping through Damascus' crooked streets and colorful, crowded souks, and trekking deep into the desert, hoping that rumor and whispers (which is all she has to go on) will lead her to the truth.

"Not the performance we are used to hearing."

Barbara creates an energy field around her that extends to everyone she meets and electrifies each book she records. She is superb with accents, unfailingly accurate and consistent. Her repertoire of dialects enlivens characters from cockney to Castillian, Broadway to Budapest. She owns numerous mystery series, with characterizations including Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody, Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax and, recently, Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon. All would simply not be right with another reader. Her astute sense of timing and sensitivity to the characters are intrinsic to her work. This is a quote from "Are You Listening".

I don't understand why after having Ms. Rosenblat narrate the first thirteen books in the series you would select someone with totally different skills and voice perform the final book in the series. This spoils my enjoyment and although I listen to the rest of the series again and again I skip this book when I do. Although I have bought all the books, I am unable to enjoy listening to the complete series. If you would please have Ms. Rosenblat perform this book I would purchase her version so I could actually enjoy it. It is sad enough that Dorothy Gillman has past on and will no longer entertain us with the wit and charm we can enjoy of her Mrs. Pollifax series without you ruining the last book in it's audio version for her fans. PLEASE FIX THIS ERROR. Thank you.

    "Saddness..."

The Mrs. Pollifax series has been brain "cotton candy" for me and my grandmother to enjoy together. Over the years, I gradually acquired the whole series for grandma... except this book... I was waiting for Barbara Rosenblat to record it. I finally gave up... apparently it isn't going to happen. Although Sharon Williams is a fine narrator, every time she spoke for Mrs. Pollifax it jarred me, because it just wasn't the right voice. This book, the last of the series, is very short, borrows heavily from plot lines in prior books (kept thinking I had read it before) and just plain old isn't as good as her previous books. If you want to check out this series, start with "The Unexpected Mrs Pollifax" #1 and read more or less in order... stop before reading this one... unless you really, really love them.

    "Disappointed in narrator"

Very disappointed in the narrator for the last volume in the Mrs Pollifax series. All the other volumes were wonderfully narrated by Barbara Rosenblat; although she has narrated a version of this book, too, Audible chose another narrator. The high, girlish voice for Mrs Pollifax doesn't at all suit her character or age. Also, the hissing sound on the narrator's "s"s was very irritating.

    "Horribly Bad Narration"
How did the narrator detract from the book?

This narrator gave the elderly Mrs. Pollifax the voice of a silly high pitched young girl. Awful. Simply awful, Other books in the series were read by the excellent Barbara Rosenblat with an appropriate intelligent, humorous, lower pitched voice. Listening to this after the others in the series was like listening to finger nails on the chalk board. It is as if instead of trying to complete a series by using similar narration, the new narrator tried to be as different as possible from the previous narrator. Unfortunately, since the previous narrator was excellent, this means this narrator was bad in every possible way.

This book should be rerecorded by Ms. Rosenblat or some other competant narrator. The story itself is typical Mrs. Pollifax, with typical coincidences and escapes. Mrs. Pollifax fans will enjoy the story.

"Sharon Williams is no Barbara Rosenblat"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one will enjoy this. I love Mrs Pollifax, but Sharon Williams destroyed her personality through poor narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Sharon Williams’s performances?

    Never.

    "Worst narration in the series"
What did you love best about Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled?

It was honestly so hard to follow the story b/c I was so distracted by the completely unimaginative rendering of Sharon Williams. I was used to Barbara Rosenblats enthralling rendition. Honestly, most of the time I couldn't even tell who was talking. I guess I need to read it the old fashioned way and imagine the voices.

What other book might you compare Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled to and why?

Its very much like Mary Higgins Clark series or a bit like Agatha Christie but with a much more colorful main character.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She didn't do a distinctive voice for Ms. Pollifax. It was so blah and didn't capture her character at all. Honestly, I had a hard time following the story listening to it b/c I couldn't tell who was talking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nope. Too frustrated by the narrator.

    Any additional comments?

Audible--please please please have Barbara Rosenblat do this book. Its worth redoing. Its the only book in the series she doesn't narrate. Why?!

"Different Narrator. Good story, but last in serie"

Sharon Williams is good, but she doesn't portray the age of Mrs. Pollifax effectively. It was a bit jarring to go from the elderly woman Barbara Rosenblatt played to such a younger characterization. The story itself is excellent. It could only have been better if Mrs. Pollifax had made a decision in the story that it was going to be her last mission instead of leaving it open.

    "A wonderful series destroyed.."

I have been a long term addict of the Mrs Pollifax series, I own and have read multiple times most of her books, because I liked the light humor, confident, well grounded grandmother turned hero. I equally fell in love with the earlier books released on Audible, the previous reader did a fantastic job with the down to earth, grandmotherly Mrs Pollifax. I am heartbroken to see this series destroyed by what I can only guess was a really bad ghost writer, that has zero understanding of the courageous, get it done Mrs Pollifax. I was equally horrified to hear this young debutant voice that is the new "more helpless & girly" Mrs Pollifax, and wanted to strangle the reader with a "feminine" Ferrell (what was wrong with rugged & sexy ???) and a feminine sounding Mr. Carstairs (feminine male CIA director???). It was truly painful to listen to this audio. The reader might be great in a Southern high society book, but horrible in this "grandmother does CIA agent" book. I will definitely not torture myself by buying any more of the recent Mrs. Pollifax audible series, and it makes me very sad to have a really fun series destroyed..

A 50-something who loves sci-fi, cozy mysteries, thrillers, an occasional romance, and any genre if it is a good story. And especially if it makes me laugh! No vampires or zombies though - these are NOT sci-fi!

    "The last one"

Sadly, this is the last of Mrs. Polliax's adventures. Once again this senior citizen outwits the bad guys when no one else can. She has to find a kidnapped American and get her out of Syria. With her usual charm and unexpected karate skills, she accomplishes her mission in her own way. The narrator does a good job, but I prefer Barbara Rosenblat's narration.

    "Where is Barbara Rosenblatt?"

After listening to the 13 previous books in this series read by Barbara Rosenblatt, I was very disappointed in the reading by Sharon Williams. Ms. Rosenblatt's portrayal of Mrs. Pollifax and the other characters in the book was terrific. I am afraid Miss Williams was not able to convey the different characters with the sense of individuality that Ms. Rosenblatt presented. Ms. Williams's Emily was not as feisty as Ms. Rosenblatt's portrayal. There was too much sameness in the Williams version.
