Editorial reviews

C.J. Critt gives a high-octane performance in this NASCAR-based mystery featuring Alexandra "Barney" Barnaby. The second in the series has Barney and her race-car-driving sweetie, Sam Hooker, dealing with cheating, murder, and the kidnapping of Hooker's Saint Bernard, Beans. Janet Evanovich's wisecracking dialogue is well served by Critt. She's comfortable with comic timing and never misses an opportunity to make Evanovich's outrageous characters larger than life. While Barney won't make fans forget Stephanie Plum, this light mystery set around the grease pits of the racing world, especially as delivered by Critt, is sure to please.

Publisher's summary

It's the last race of the season, the wheels are smoking, and the temperature is rising at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Alexandra Barnaby is NASCAR-driver Sam Hooker's race-day spotter, his eye-in-the-sky, telling him when to pass and when to let off the gas.

From her vantage point high above the grandstand, she's also seeing goings-on in the infield that will change her life: events that will lead to a stolen racecar hauler, a kidnapped Saint Bernard, a bizarre murder, some restless nights under the covers with Sam, and a reunion with super cigar roller Rosa Florez and the queen of wholesale fruit, Felicia Ibarra.

From Miami, Florida, to Concord, North Carolina, and back to Miami, this is an action-packed, multi-car pileup of shady dealings, stolen technology, drive-thru windows, and destruction of personal property. It offers everything you always wanted to know about righteous indignation, stealing an 18-wheeler, stashing a dead body, and sex in the fast lane.

Not So Great

This book is pretty dull and predictable. If it wasn't for the narrator, it would have been unbearable. The narrator is first rate, but the book is boring. This is a far cry from the Stephanie Plum books.

Not Worth the Money

This book is written in the form of slapstick comedy wihtout the wit of slapstick. The only good part of the book is C.J. Crit read it. Very disappointing.

Like one from the Stephanie Plum series

I love the Full Blast series, and not at all the Stephanie Plum series. This one is more like the Plum series. After 1.5 hours, I realized this is not for me.

Not exactly a Plum...

A long long series of events leading to a cute but usual ending. Seems the Evanovich books that are not part of the Stephanie Plum series are just carved out methodically and lack any real lustre. Have always been disappointed by books that aren't real Plums.

nothing new, boring

The story is not as funny as her other books. The characters keeps on finding corps but why they have to move them or hide them is beyond my understanding. At different points of story, I felt the story line is getting moronic and have no common sense. Not a very well written story and it seem to me the author is just filling words on white paper so there is a book to be published. Did not enjoy the book.

Weekend at Bernies absurdity & hillbilly muzak

It’s all bonkers comedy skits and completely implausible actions from the get go, when Alexandra and Sam discover a dead body and repeatedly don’t call the cops. Weird changes from book one include upping Sam Hooker’s hillbilly factor, having him on the outs with Alexandra because he cheated on her, and only calling him Hooker instead of Sam. These things made him less likable, but it appears this book cares more about setting the couple up for a show as we see him try to get back in her good graces. Having the same author and narrator as the Stephanie Plum series continues to haunt the story; there’s a scene here nearly identical to One For the Money’s meet-not-cute where Stephanie meets Benito Ramirez and he creepily comes on to her and asks if she enjoys pain. Then there’s the odd music played at random chapter endings. Honestly, even bought on sale, this is barely an okay listen.

AWFUL

The narrator made the male characters sound like morons. They were but she made it worse. I ended up throwing it out after the first disc.

terrible narration

I like Evanovich's novels, and have liked other audio editions, but I found it impossible to listen to this one. The narrator used a painfully exaggerated cartoon-like voice for the NASCAR-driver hero, and a bland generic voice for the New Jersey auto mechanic heroine. I had to turn it off by the 2nd or 3rd chapter. A big disappointment.
