"If you thought that stalking a killer on the Internet had been done to death in books and bad movies, this one will have you pushing the reload button on your browser." (Amazon.com review)
"While Cole's obsession over this guilty secret makes him less than likable at times, a nailbiting climax erases any doubts about his character-and any lingering questioning about the storytelling abilities of Iles, who here uses rich first-person narration and clever plotting to tell a sizzler of a thriller." (Publishers Weekly)
I was thinking about not downloading this book due to some of the reviews but preious books by Greg Iles told me to go ahead with it. I was not wrong on going ahead with it. Some of the subject matter and graphic description were disconcerting but I felt totally relevant to the entire story. I like detail in a book and Greg Iles provides that and you came to know the principle characters pretty well. All of that helps the entire book in my estimation. I had never heard Eric Dove as a narrator either but he did a fine job on this. I have no intention of giving away the story line. I just recommend it. A Lot!!!! The killer is a mind bender and does it well. I'm not sure I will read this one again in the future though. Some of it was truly mind boggling and makes you stop and think about the computer world we live in today that can cause extreme harm to people. The whole book was good but the last few hours of this book caused me to shut off my phone and get on with it. It's worth listening to in my estimation.
I have to admit it, the man can write! This one held me until the end. I loved all of the characters (loved to hate a couple of them!) and the plot had plenty of twists. My husband and I both listened to this one and both thoroughly enjoyed it. One caveat- please read the premise of the book. If you are offended by sex in audiobooks, or hate dark murder mysteries, don't download this one. If on the other hand you love well written dark mysteries well read by a pro, enjoy!
I saved one of Greg Iles' first books until last. It is a little dated with reference to the computer technology but this is a great listen. It starts out fast and keeps going. Plan your listen for when you have some time When you start this one you won't want to stop.
Scary, Spine-tingling (Is that one word or two?), Unique
This book was really unique, I can't make a comparison.
***Spoiler**** When Harper started talking to the killer on the computer.
I pretty much did.
Great Book! Even though the technology is ten + years old, the book is still edgy and relevant. Highly recommended.
Nurse, mom, loved to read....but now I love to listen. When I retire I hope to hear waves crashing in 1 ear and audible in the other!
Yessssssssssssss!!!! Some of the best writing I have ever read or listened to. The story was a thriller and the narration was mesmerizing. I could not stop listening. I had to force myself to stop to be able to get some sleep. It was long but I did not want it to end...every word had meaning.
I have listened to one other Greg Ilse's audiobook that was very similar in it's intense and breath-taking subject matter and story line.
I loved Harper at the grave sitting, playing his guitar and singing the song he had wrote but there were many favorite and memorable moments like the dialogue between Harper and the FBI psychiatrist....
I want everything but all I need is you!
Electrical Engineer, 51 years old father of 3.
Greg Iles weaves another great tale. Totally believable and really will make you think about what your family means to you. The technologe is a little dated but does not effect the story. The ending was shocking, you never really know the people who you really love.
This is a book that I had read previously but
I still enjoyed listening to it. The narrator really brought the charaters to life. This book has what it takes to keep your attention: sex, murder and everyday struggles.
Keeps you guessing and on your toes throughout the entire book
Any of the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. They have a very similar creative mind and writing style.
Just can't pin any one scene down. It was all great!
Yea from beginning to end.
It's one of the best...completely gripping!
I enjoyed the battle between the brilliance of good and evil.
He is able to "cast" a character through changes in his voice and able to step out of the "narrator's" position...as an external force, and get deep into your mind!
To get a better idea of my background. I am a working class white male in my forties. I love good fiction, and I love smart books. I have drifted towards a lot of European writers like Reginald Hill, Val McDermid.,Etc....
I was almost discouraged in the beginning, but then it took me on one of the best pychological roller coaster rides I've ever enjoyed. If you're into a psyhcological mind _ _ _ _. This is a great book. The only disappointing part of this for me, was the ending. Normally I would say - Don't bother. After 20 hours of great - I had to endure 1 hour of over done. Too much of a dramtic ending played by the wife. Too much of a lot of stuff at the end. So this may be the first time I am over-riding my instinct to say "Don't bother" and say instead "It's really good"
