For defense attorney Samantha Brinkman, it's not about guilt or innocence - it's about making sure her clients walk.
In the follow-up to bestselling Blood Defense, Samantha is hired as the legal advocate for Cassie Sonnenberg after a brutal stabbing left her father and brother dead, and her mother barely clinging to life. It's a tabloid-ready case that has the nation in an uproar - and Sam facing her biggest challenge yet. Why did Cassie survive? Is she hiding something?
As Sam digs in to find the answers, she's surprised to find herself identifying with Cassie, becoming more and more personally entangled in the case. But when Sam finally discovers the reason for that kinship, she faces a choice she never imagined she'd have to make.

This is another really good book, the second in the Samantha Brinkman series. In this book a family is butchered by an unknown, possibly a gang member. The only one untouched is the adopted teenage daughter. Throughout the book a horrible story of psychological and sexual abuse is revealed. Because Samantha is the young girl's attorney and she herself has a history of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, she is inclined to believe. As the story progresses more horrific acts come out. Are they true? Clark does a great job leading the reader/listener between two prominent characters and until you hear the last chapter you will not know who committed the crime.
Samantha is surrounded by a cast of colorful characters that really fill the story with excellent dialogue.
Interesting subplots going on as well that include drugs and human trafficking and some not so ethical acts by the attorney but done for a good cause.
Angela Dawe did a great job narrating. She is normally not on my top narrator list but I believe she has found her niche with this series.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I love espionage, legal, and detective thrillers but listen to most genres. Very frequent reviews. No plot spoilers! Please excuse my typos!
Moral Defense follows Blood Defense in Marcia Clark's new Samantha Brinkman series. In the two outstanding novels Clark has developed a seriously likeable yet deeply flawed protagonist. In my opinion the first two novels in this series are equally outstanding, but the narration of Moral Defense is much better than that of Blood Defense. Those listeners familiar with Clark's earlier Rachel Knight series with find the Samantha Brinkman series more serious/less playful and will also note Clark's improvement/maturing both as a writer and storyteller. I have complained about Angela Dawe's narrations in several past Audible reviews. Either she has gotten better or my taste has changed because her narration of this novel was excellent
It is ironic when John Grisham and Marcia Clark release legal thrillers two weeks apart and Marcia Clark's release is so much better than Grisham's that you question, "Why read Grisham at all?"
Physician in Healthcare IT. Commuter. Listen to a lot of books. Recently introduced to Audible. I am hooked.
read the first book prior to this. it's a good story and the narrator is terrific.
Absolutely enjoyed listening to this. Narration was 100%
Plot twists everywhere. Stories intertwining leading to major reveals in the end!
Give this one a go. Worth every star!
The reader is excellent, making the characters come alive. Marcia Clark is a wonderful writer, providing a strong story line, well-developed characters, and great twists and turns throughout the book.
Sam...the story showed her strength, sense of humor, soft side, intellect, loyalty, and more.
Yes...it was hard to put it down.
So glad Marcia Clark became a writer!
I was skeptical about the author. Started it last night and had trouble falling asleep as I usually do during the read...
Kept resetting my sleep timer ... just bought the first in series to catch up.... starting it in few minutes... so relaxing.
Sassy dialogue, humor, and a great reader are important to me.
Ms Clark is a great story teller, but it was reader Ms Dawe that made all the difference for this book. Ms Dawe had great delivery on author's fast paced dialogue. e.g." bon appetite brave warrior!" And, "Bulla was a goddess".
Note: I do use new 1.25x speed to match author's intent. (this new speed has really improved a good story)
I loved Alex. Ms Dawe's male voices are her best.
Ms Dawe has found her good cadence and this book really show cases the improvement.
I have over 100 of her reads, see Julie Garwood's Sweet Talk and Tiffany Snow's series for Romance, not to be missed.
Oh yes, as author really knows how to put reality and mystery together in a fast paced story.
In Audio, a reader can make or break a good story. See reader Scott Brick and Jonathan Davis in Sandra Brown's Mean Steak.
I will have to check out book #1 in this series, but I am not a fan of reader so will wait till 50% sale. Since this book got great reviews, see Shelly's and Wayne's reviews who I follow, I am confident that author and producers will select Ms Dawe to read the rest of this series. I like January LaVoy, see Harlan Corban's work she reads.
I really enjoy that Sam really cares about her clients. She makes decisions that you question, but it makes her who she is, and I like that she is not perfect. Great story.
"An excellent follow up"
This is no two in a series and as someone who doesn't really like series very much, I can honestly say I'm now converted. I can't wait to read the next...... however many.
This story if full of twists and turns. Ms Clark is a master of changing your mind for you! Did the sweet fifteen year old adopted daughter kill her family in cold blood, or didn't she? As Sam and her team work on this case and numerous others it seems, sometimes yes and sometimes no! The main characters in the books are developing nicely and the sub story which can't be mentioned without giving away the best twist ever, is also developing and growing into a book in its own right. Waiting now for more in the series!
