Misery Bay | [Steve Hamilton]

Misery Bay

On a frozen January night, a young man loops one end of a long rope over the branch of a tree. The other end he ties around his neck. A snowmobiler will find him 36 hours later, his lifeless eyes staring out at the endless coldwater of Lake Superior. It happens in a lonely corner of the Upper Peninsula, in a place they call Misery Bay, a good 250 miles west of Paradise.

It happens in a lonely corner of the Upper Peninsula, in a place they call Misery Bay, a good 250 miles west of Paradise.

Alex McKnight does not know this young man, and he won’t even hear about the suicide until two months later, when the door to the Glasgow Inn opens and the last person Alex would ever expect comes walking inside to ask for his help.

What seems like a simple quest to find a few answers will turn into a nightmare of sudden violence and bloody revenge, and a race against time to catch a ruthless and methodical killer. Alex McKnight knows all about evil, of course, having faced down a madman who killed his partner and left a bullet next to his heart. Mobsters, drug dealers, hitmen - he’s seen them all and they’ve taken away almost everything he’s ever loved. But none of that could ever prepare him for the darkness he’s about to enter....

    "Boring"

When I'm choosing to read an entertaining book, not a classic or non-fiction, just a fun, light read, I expect to be entertained, surprised, and at least occasionally on the edge of my seat. Misery Bay did none of that for me. The one "twist" was slow in developing, obvious, and clunky. There was no action, no suspense.

I liked the main character, I was rooting for him, but even the friendship and the romance that were possibilities were, well, I just say "lame" so I don't spoil anything.

My favorite character was his friend who works in the movie theater and there wasn't enough of him.

    Disappointing.

"The Best Entry of the Alex McKnight Series"

Misery Bay is an outstanding novel. Steve Hamilton is at the top of his game here, and the narration by Dan John Miller is also excellent. I have enjoyed all of the Alex McKnight books, although I would rate the majority of this series as "4 stars" (out of 5).
Misery Bay is the exception. I have actually both listened to and read this novel, which is something that I rarely do. Mr. Hamilton's ability to use the UP setting in Michigan to help set the tone of the story is quite impressive, and the supporting characters are very well developed. Sheriff Roy Maven is one of the most memorable characters that I have come across in a long time, and Mr. Miller does an outstanding job with narrating the Sheriff's dialogue. To some degree, the police investigation is actually a subplot to the central theme of this novel - the relationship between Maven and McKnight, and how their friendship develops in the face of adversity. Don't miss this one!

    "Not Boring"

A good mystery from the start. My first listen by Steven Hamilton. It was a nicely paced mystery and the ending pulled all the pieces together well.  I purchased it on sale and it was worth the time.  Dan John Miller does a good job narrating and is a good fit for the main character. I can see why people like this series.

    "Terrific reader, good story"

Steve Hamilton is, as usually, very skilled in crafting yet another Alex McNight story. Not THE best Alex but always engaging; and the terrific reader makes it definitely worthwhile.
