Critic reviews

“Coben adroitly applies the fundamental rules of thrillerdom (offer a raft of potential villains; keep the action moving at breakneck speed) in this highly entertaining novel...a page-turner!” ( Publishers Weekly)

A bit dated!

As I feel when I am in just about any Coben book, it was hard to go to bed and turn off the book. Scott Brick (my favorite reader always makes it better). As I said above the story is a bit dated but as usual the characters were very interesting and well worked out. I just new I had until I was as usual bombed with the real adversary of the story. Again we see the love of basketball behind Harlan Coben, We have characters to love, to question, and naturally those we hate until . . .

Couldn't put this down

I couldn't stop listening to this - and it is one long book! Perhaps because I worked in the health field at the beginning of the HIV epidemic, I could so relate to much of what was being described. Despite its length, the book was fast moving. Can't believe this is one of Harlan Coben's first novels! So many twists. And an ending I never expected!

A cure for HIV?

What would you do if you found a cure to one of our most deadly diseases? That is the question Dr. Harvey Riker must deal with. Remarkably, there are people that do not want some diseases cured.
When Michael Silverman, NBA star, is diagnosed HIV positive, things change dramatically. Someone has been killing patients at Riker's AIDS clinic, patients presumably cured of the deadly disease thus destroying the proof. Michael is betting his life that Harvey can cure him. But will Michael live long enough to receive the entire treatment?
A very good medical mystery in the vein of Robin Cook, I did not see the explosive ending coming.

Worth the read

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, it did. It has some unexpected twists.

Any additional comments?

Good narrator. Thats important to me.
Even though it was written a long time ago whem HIV was just becomimg publicly known, it is a great novel. Very edge of your seat. Was tedious at times and preachy and i wished i was reading instead so i could skip over that part, but only in a couple of places. And mostly it was because it was toward the end and i was axious to get to the outcome. The author warns of this a little at the beginning. Still a best seller in my opinion.

A good read

Although dated, still a good listen. The author did warn us, so no surprise there. These issues remains still, just substitute any modern viruses

A piece of history that many of us have forgotten woven into a mystery that is very well written.

Even though the author apologizes that this is only his second book I would have never known since it is so well written. Enjoyed the plot and the characters and it felt very believable to me.

Narrator Issues/ Gratuitous Violence/ Explicit Sex

This was decent story, albeit entirely too violent. Less is more. The narrator was really good at a few voices. However, the third person narration was extremely difficult to listen to. It had this kind of pleading, begging tone to it much of the time.
