I got into the John Ceepak series when I noticed it recommended as pick on Audible. I loved the Mad Mouse and just burned through the next three books in the series. I was looking forward to Mind Scrambler, anticipating the book would follow Ceepak's no good father to Ohio. Instead, we went to Atlantic City where Ceepak and Danny run into ex-girlfriend Katy. It is fun to follow the untwisting knot of relationships and motivations as they are revealed thread by thread. It is this understanding that Danny is beginning to understand. Danny is pressed to make decisions based on his assessments of the human beings. Danny's skill matures enough to enable him to bring John Ceepak from the edge of murdering someone himself.
The Audible recording is narrated by Jeff Woodman who does an outstanding job. I highly recommend the audible version of the entire series.
Actor/director/teacher. Split my time between Beijing and Seattle now. Listen to Audible on the subway and while driving or riding my bike.
The Cepak books are a little "one note" for my taste, but the plotting and local color are fun and for a light read they serve admirably.
Jeff Woodman does a spectacular job of narration. He nails dialects (is he really from New Jersey?) and provides a wonderful variety of character voices which entertain all on their own in addition to doing their basic job of letting us know who is speaking at any given time. He captures the spirit of the book perfectly and enhances it as well.
i thoroughly enjoyed this book. love the characters, always look forward to a new one in the series. jeff woodman surpassed himself with the narration. his voices for detective flynn and the gay dancers had me laughing out loud. A really good listen!
I believe he has the character spot on. Reminds me some of Parker's Spencer. Love that series.
At first was thrown by the humor and thought might be for younger listeners. Glad I stuck with it. Went back and downloaded all the other books in the series. I'm a fan.
I hope Danny Boyle never grows up. His comments can be hilarious. The line about Fox had me reversing the audio so I could hear it again. But I must say that there was way too much vulgar language in this book. I know the author was making a point but it was overdone. I think it could have been handled better. You can make a person obnoxious with a little vulgarity, not overkill. That is why it's 4 stars instead of 5.
I have listened to all the Ceepak books since they first came out and this one didn't disappoint. I love how both Ceepak and Danny's characters continue to develop. And Jeff Woodman is awesome as usual!
Enjoyed the humor in this one. Good characters, interesting story. I kind of felt this was more of a Danny Boyle mystery than a John Ceepak tale, but that's really not a good or bad thing. I found the book similar in style and mood to other crime novels set in his region of the country, I was somewhat reminded of William Lashner's "Marked Man". Interesting... one reviewer complained about the author's "political sniping" If there was any of this going on, it was mild (and somewhat refreshing) and there were very few instances of it anyway. I can always enjoy a little poke at the right. If the author was truly political, he's have crucified Donald Trump. I'll read more by this author as long as the same narrator does the reading.
I am someone who enjoys audible books very much now that they exist. As a young student (real young) I can remember a teacher telling me how books can transport people to different places & open up a whole new world. This is how listening to audible books make me feel. Now if I can just stop falling asleep while listening to them at night I would be fine. Ha ha
Best so far
It kept me interested throughout
I sure did laugh at times
I like Chris Grabensteins books a lot
The story was quite boring-I felt the author was just filling pages. I listened to the book while performing other duties just to finish. He also wasted many pages on explanations, not giving the listener or reader any mindset. This is the first time reading this series and am not inclined to buy any more. Very disappointed.
John is my favorite in this whole series
John and Danny make great partners. Their interaction make the story come alive.
