Publisher's summary

Probationary constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny.

Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Well-narrated, inventive story

Narrator was perfect for this story. Really enjoyed the book, just had a little trouble at times following a few details, but this is more likely due to the listener than the author.

Really great

I super enjoyed this. The writing is great—witty and often very funny. It’s full of wonderful “history of London” tidbits sprinkled here and there. The narrator is spot on and fantastic.

My only criticism is that the ending feels a bit thrown together? The protagonist just seems to stumble through the end. He doesn’t feel super in control of things and just has a resolution almost handed to him.

Other than that, it’s super great. Looking forward to reading more of these.

Just Not Interesting

I liked this book to start with simply because the author seems to know what he is doing. Unfortunately, about halfway through the book I suddenly realized that I really didn't actually care about the story at all and that I'd rather spend my time staring at a wall than be forced to continue it. It just wasn't a gripping story in the least. Normally, I'd give such a book one or two stars, but like a jaded lover I'll just say it's me, not you. I'm sure you'll make some other reader very happy but we just aren't compatible.

Excellent Narration!

We all know that narration can make or break it. Kobna’s narration makes it! He is so authentic you really feel you are there. I don’t get why someone would kvetch about an inhale etc in the narration; that’s what makes it real and believable! Aside from the excellent performance by Kobna, the book itself is very enjoyable. Looking forward to the next in the series.

For an English audience only

I struggled to finish this book,. there are just too many English references for an American.

story good, narration bad

Story was interesting, but narration was horrible. or was it the engineering? quiet and breathy, made it very difficult to hear/understand. I stuck with it where normally I'd return.

Narrator is ANNOYING!

It's a pretty good story I guess but the narrator talks very fast and always seemed out of breath. I understand being dramatic in parts but he was always dramatic!! geez! I just can't listen to another book in this series because he narrates them all!
