Publisher's summary

Years ago, South Florida cop Jack Carpenter beat up a murder suspect named Simon Skell, a dangerous predator with a penchant for playing the Rolling Stones' "Midnight Rambler" as he tortured young women. When Jack lost his temper, he lost his job and marriage, too; so as Skell's early release from prison draws near, the tarnished hero, now a specialist in missing-child cases, sees an opportunity to make things right. But his mission uncovers a shocking criminal conspiracy and soon Jack is trying to outwit, outrun, and outmaneuver his enemies.

Critic reviews

"Well-defined characters and intricately woven subplots, one involving a nail-biting scene at Disney World, make this a page-turner." (Publishers Weekly)

"Swain is one terrific writer." (Wall Street Journal)

Not one of James Swain's best

This book was definately not one of James Swain's better efforts. The plot was light and the narration didn't help. I hadn't heard this narrator before and I don't know if I would listen to him again. The female voices were difficult to understand because the reader made the pitch too high.

If you want to listen to better books, try Swain's other books about gambling - great detail and full of fun useless information!

Terrible

This disgraced ex-cop runs all over Florida chasing an unrealistic crew of serial murderers. I can’t tell you how many times I said you must be kidding. The protagonist is supposed to be an expert, but makes more mistakes than a rookie and tells the FBI how to work cases. The dialogue was juvenile and awkward. Even the child abduction at Disney is based on a well known urban legend. The body count stacks up faster than a blizzard because of this band of five or six (I lost count)killers working as a group. It was way too Hollywood and especially at the end. One of the worst I listened to in four years at Audible. The narrator was very good. I liked the dog.
