Publisher's Summary

When do you do when you gaze into the mirror - and find a stranger looking back?

Liz Sansborough has no recollection of her past as a CIA agent; no idea what her future holds. For her, there is only the present...and the chilling knowledge that the world's most lethal assassin has set his sights on her. When your only link to your identity is a stranger who claim to be lover? Gordon is so gentle, so loving - and so secretive. If Liz dares to put her life into his powerful hands, will he guard it with his own - or snuff it out?

What do you do when violence explodes around you, when nothing makes sense, when nobody - including you - is who he or she appears to be? As Liz unravels a series of lies, she begins to suspect that the truth she encounters might be far more sinister and deadly than the original deception.

What the Critics Say

"There's a lot of blood and guts here, but also an interesting story about how a woman who preferred to be on the sidelines of life becomes a passionate, committed actor in this drama." (Library Journal).

    "a good thriller"

I found this book in a different way than I do most times. I' listened to the narrator on two other books, clicked on her name and Masquerade was the first book that caught my eye when her books popped up. I read the summary and it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did. It wasn't the greatest thriller ever written but it was entertainin. I found myself caught up in the story. I thought about it when I wasn't listeneing, thinking about what was going to happen. There seemed to be an awfully lot o killing, sometimes it even seemed a bit far fetched. But, as I said, I did like it and I wil give the auther, Gayle Lynds, another shot at some point. I recommend you give it a try if you like thrillers.

    "Exciting Read"

Masquerade was such an excellent book, I don't even know where to begin when it comes to critiquing it. This book is one of those reads you just can't put down. I was totally caught up in the plot and narration. The only word I could think of, after finishing this book was: wow!! I will be reading more books by this author.

This and Book of Spies are both good ones. I liked Lynds in the Covert series, so I followed her to these and enjoyed the stories and the narration.

    "Hugely Disappointing"

I enjoyed Lynds' other novel I downloaded from Audible, "The Last Spymaster." The characters seemed real and the plot did not strain one's ability to suspend disbelief.

I do not understand how the same author could have written both of these novels.

In marked contrast to "The Last Spymaster," the plot of "Masquerade" is silly. The coincidences are too convenient (no spoilers here, but you won't miss them), the conspiracy too incredible, and the bad guys are caricatures of themselves.

The narrator's tendency to perform male voices by speaking through drawn lips or by making them speak with a Brooklyn accent did not help.

Because I paid for it, I listened to the whole thing hoping it would get better. It never did.

    "It was OK"

The book was a very easy listen and it had some good parts but the premise that a celebrity journalist can outsmart a dozen people with intelligence training is ridiculous. I like my book to at least have some possibility of being a "real" story. It's not a bad book but there are no surprises either. Just a reasonably good, easy read.
