Senate investigations and Justice Department accusations multiply as Mike Nolan, a Marine Corps reserve helicopter pilot and trial attorney in civilian life, is hired to defend the company from the criminal investigations and a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the most notorious lawyer in America on behalf of the First Lady.
Nolan knows that to win his case, he has to find out what really caused Marine One to crash and why the president threw caution aside to go to a meeting no one seems to know about.

"Nonstop legal suspense at its best."(Publishers Weekly)
Literary graduate and published columnist turned glorified grease monkey.
I really enjoyed this one. This book suggests the sword of damocles theory how people in positions of power are always under constant threat. The President's chopper crashes and the expected media frenzy ensues, the manufacturer of the chopper is the obvious scape goat so a court battle follows while evidence is covered up and a the real story wreaks of conspiracy. The action starts right from the first page, and I was hard-pressed to find one dull moment. Always on the edge of my seat, the narrative is fast paced and free flowing. The only criticism I have is regarding some of the chapters in the first half. This book reads like an abridged version. sometimes, the chapters would just stop! The author tries to make it suspensefull by cutting the chapter off, mid-sentence, but it gives an unfinished impression. I was quite surprised at this. Having said that, the Narrator does a brilliant job with tones and accents, etc. It is very well read, and an exciting story to listen to.
This one is well worth a credit. Save it for a long trip because you can't stop once it gets started.
Huston does it again with this wonderful book. Full of suspense and unexpected turns that are both fantastic and plausible. This is a great book that's well read by the narrator.
I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY - (courtroom thriller) I really, really enjoyed this book. There is an intense investigation involving the crash of a French-made helicopter which kills the President of the U.S. There are all kinds of theories of whether it was due to faulty manufacturing, a storm-related accident or whether there were motives to sabotage the copter and murder the President. The investigation culminates in a federall trial where the First Lady and widows of the crew of Marine One are suing the French manufacturer for over a billion dollars. I thought the whole book was exciting and very, very interesting. I would have rated it a 5 except for the fact that I am in the legal profession and some of the courtroom procedures were a bit over the top. Despite the fact that I sometimes would roll my eyes, it was great listening.
PERFORMANCE - The narrator did a good job, but nothing exceptional. He didnt try very hard to distinguish between the different characters.
OVERALL - (Actual rating 4.5) Great courtroom thriller with elements of crash investigation and political conspiracy. No violence or foul language.
Listening while I run.
I know many enjoyed this book - but didn't work for me. The story (mystery) was not compelling and characters were dull. Try 'Term Limits' or other Vince Flynn is you like assassinations and helicopters.
Definitly. This book will remain in my library for a long time to enjoy again and again
This was NOT my favorite book from audible. I got it during the paperback sale on a lark. It's a decent book, with some strong central characters. However, the ending really irritated me. The main story was wrapped up, but all of the parallel lines of smaller stories were just left hanging. When I was teaching speech I would have counted off for the "psychological noise" factor.
Better than Grisham
Reminds me of Presumed Innocent
He really captured the essence of the character
It made me listed to it all hours of day and night and then I was sad when I finished it
Great book to listen to in car with family of boys!
I would recommend to readers (listeners) who enjoy the legal procedural in the Grisham style. Hotshot young (or early middle-age) lawyer type in a small but skilled firm is faced with a huge case that all the legal beagles think they can't handle, and who happens to fly the same helicopter type as the President. And who is a former Marine. There are twists and turns all the way through, but they feel like we've been here before. The most interesting aspect was the discussion of helicopters, how they work, their manufacture, and the deconstruction of a crash.
Joe's performance was able and did not get in the way of the material. The pomposity of the antagonist lawyer was great, bringing to mind some of the biggest stuffed shirts of all time.
Overall this is a very good, but not great, story. It felt like it was trying for the tension of a Clancy or Flynn, but sort of missed the mark. The resolution felt too Hollywood, and the repercussions not fully followed through. Often times the epilogue is the most interesting and impactful.
Enjoying one good listen after the next!
Four stars across the board, even though the story is a little bit of a stretch. Isn't that the case with most courtroom fiction? What I liked about the book was the courtroom drama and the legal wrangling between the major players. The back and forth tactical approach was a great listen.
What I didn't like so much was the rather one-dimensional characters. . . they just weren't that compelling. I didn't find myself rooting for the good guys, nor really disliking the bad guys and it didn't even bother me that a key character was killed. Had all the characters been a bit more developed, I might have cared more and it would have been the perfect court room drama.
As it was, this book is good but not great.
