Publisher's summary

Ripped from today's headlines, Brian Haig's new novel finds Army lawyer Sean Drummond caught between duty to Washington's elite and the soldiers in Iraq.

Dispatched to investigate the suicide of one of D.C.'s most influential defense officials, an ardent, early supporter of the war in Iraq, Drummond and his female partner find themselves in the middle of a tug-of-war between Washington's most influential power brokers and his own personal allegiance to the soldiers dying overseas. What he uncovers are the secrets that led to the war, secrets that, once exposed, would destroy public support and undermine the presidency. Now Drummond faces the greatest moral quandary of his life: what is the true meaning of patriotism?

Critic reviews

"A marvelously twisted plot and marvelously twisted characters help along a tale in which Drummond actually gets to act a little human. Great entertainment; highly recommended." ( Library Journal)

Trite yet Repetitious

What did you like best about Man in the Middle? What did you like least?

The narrator seemed to pronounce all the words correctly.

Has Man in the Middle turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely. How many times can one listen to the same few trite expressions?

Which scene was your favorite?

None

Could you see Man in the Middle being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It would require a compete rewrite. The dialogue would be perceived as a sarcastic satire of this genre, yet the writer seems to consider himself to be clever.

Any additional comments?

I will be much more selective in buying the $4.95 books in the future.

Man in the Middle

Another excellent book from Brian Haig. Complex plot, lots of twists and turns. Some realistic and graphic descriptions of the war, and the politics behind the scenes. This book did tend to ramble occasionally with philosophical observations or introspections which interrupted the flow of the action. The author is very funny at times and I laughed out loud. I recommend this book.

Sean Drummond Series

Sean Drummond is a lawyer - a JAG officer. Sardonic, sarcastic, and self-deprecating at times, Sean is a good guy, a patriot that has taken his oath to "preserve, protect, and defend" to heart. Each book is a complex who-done-it murder mystery in a military environment - from Baghdad to South Korea to Washington DC to Abu Ghraib, Leavenworth, and more.

Intricate plots, no objectionable language, little sex - all fade to black; Brian Haig shopped around with regard to narrators. Preference? Scott Brick or Christopher Lane - but they are all acceptable. There is a bit of violence - Sean gets himself into some scrapes, but nothing gratuitous.

Written by Brian Haig, the Sean Drummond Series consists of seven novels - Secret Sanction, Mortal Allies, The Kingmaker, Private Sector, The President's Assassin, Man in the Middle, and The Night Crew. The novels range from 12-17+ hours in length, each story has a beginning-middle-end, and you can jump in anywhere, no need to read in sequence. Released over a period of 10+ years - several publishers.

Recommended mysteries.

Wanted to like it, but...

Loved the previous Sean Drummond stories but the narrator can be heard taking deep breaths every few seconds. For me it was not enjoyable to listen to for this reason. Would have been a great listen if read by Scott Brick as in previous books. Listen to the sample before you buy.

Great Storyline

As all all reviews have written the narrator just doesn't fit the main character. It's an injustice to Brian Haig and to Sean Drummond fans. I served and was deployed to the region a few times over the years. The story really makes you think about the big picture, at least it did for me. Thanks Brian Haig for the Sean Drummond character, excited to see what he does next. I do hope you keep the plots and character development realistic and don't try to have Sean fighting zombies or something else way out there. Thanks again.

May have been better with different narrator

I like the series but sometimes there is too much of the main character and the other person who is in the story spending too much time being a smart ass and not developing the story.

Terrible, terrible narrator

Slow, droll, and I had to force myself to finish it due to the worst narration I have ever experienced. The performance was so bad that it distracted from the story. This made me tune out major parts of the story and I never went back to pick up what I missed.

Loved it

I loved this one!! While it took me a while to get used to a new reader, once I did , I was fine. I found the topic very timely and gave a interesting spin to current events (albeit fiction - I hope) . Loved the depth of the female character and hope the ending is foreshadowing a sequel.
