Publisher's summary

The scent is unmistakable - gardenias, sweet and delicate, the same perfume that his beautiful first wife, Jennifer, always wore. Opening his eyes in the hospital room where he's recovering from an accident, New Orleans detective Rick Bentz sees her standing in the doorway. Then Jennifer blows him a kiss and disappears. But it couldn't have been Jennifer. She died 12 years ago....

Once out of the hospital, Bentz begins to see Jennifer everywhere. Could she still be alive? But it was Bentz who identified Jennifer's body after her horrible car wreck, and there had been no question in his mind that it was her crumpled form behind the wheel, her clothes, her wedding ring. He's never doubted it - until now. He can't tell his new wife, Olivia, about the sightings or his secret fear that he's losing his mind. But Olivia is also hiding a secret....

When a copy of Jennifer's death certificate arrives in the mail, emblazoned with a red question mark, Bentz follows the postmark trail to Los Angeles, returning to the painful memories he's tried so hard to forget, and straight into a killer's web.

Someone's been waiting patiently, silently. Someone who knows exactly what happened that night 12 years ago and has been anticipating Bentz's every move.

Soon it will be Bentz's turn to suffer for his sins. But he won't be the only one made to pay the ultimate price. For a diabolical killer has now made Olivia the prime target...

Riveting read

This book kept you on the edge of your seat. I wish Montoya had been included more but I still really enjoyed the book.

stay away!

I've listened to hundreds of books from Audible over the years and, no matter how good or bad a book, I've rarely taken the time to prepare a review. This book is poorly written and extremely predictable, Plus the narration is amateurish. Save your money and time. Don't buy this book.

Excrutiatingly boring

I have never read nor listened to a book that was so horribly written. The author obviously never heard of that old "show, don't tell" rule. Each character keeps "thinking" one and the same thought over and over and over and over again, only interrupted by the author stating the same obvious facts, well, over and over again. Great listen for people with severe memory difficulties. I couldn't finish it, but I rest assured that I'll be able to pick up the "narrative" in twenty years again without any problem.

Waaaaayyyy Toooo Much Jennifer!!!

This book was ridiculous. I read another Rick Bentz book and it was pretty good, but this one was too focused on "Jennifer" I got so sick of his "visions, sightings, etc." of Jennifer. I am so sick of that name. What a MAJOR Dud...ugh!

Worst of the series

Several times the chapter just ended mid sentence and a new chapter started.

Not crazy about the narration as well.

Sorry

This book could easily be made into a drinking game: one slurp for every time the dumb detective runs after "Jennifer" -- you'll be soused in no time at all.

Malice by Lisa Jackson

This book is so poorly written I cannot finish listening to it. After half an hour, I started jumping chapters to find out if the writing improved. It did not. An endless string of words to fill up pages for scenes and dialogue that desperately need vitality and verisimilitude. And, each scene would be better told with about half of the words.

Internal dialogues a character has with him/herself that are so juvenile and cliched that I expected the characters to off themselves by eating too much peanut butter and jelly.

How this book ever got published in the first place, I cannot imagine. The narrators sound as if they are in a hurry up get to the end of the story. I can understand this as reading the entire manuscript must have been truly painful.

Do yourself a favor, take a pass on this one.

AWFUL!

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't write a review because I never got past chapter 8 of this book. Then for the good of all audible listeners, I took one for the team and wanted to save anyone else from having to do it. This book, the narration of this book, is so completely lackluster, annoying and flat, I felt nauseous when I kept turning it back on. Because I was trying. I really was. Maybe the idea of the story is good. Hence the 2 stars. Didn't want to short change the author if the book got better. My 8 chapters didn't. The 'play' back and forth..yes the woman reads the female parts, the man the male., was horrible. It sounded like a telephone conversation ( some of it was) between 2 incredibly boring ppl. And then when they did decide to get a little more into character, they overacted to the point of nails on a chalk board. I strongly agree with anyone giving this book a bad review. Trust me, I'm trying to save you a credit!
