Mad River | [John Sandford]

Mad River

Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what's-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns. The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down.

    "Wonderful depiction of rural community"
Would you listen to Mad River again? Why?

I always relisten to Sandford's Virgil Flowers novels. I want to visit these communities again through Flowers' generous observations of people and landscapes.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I never know where Sandford is going and I always enjoy the ride.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved when Sandford described the pleasure of driving at night. He then links it to the pleasure of being a child driven through the night by parents melodically talking in the front seat.

    Any additional comments?

Please, John Sandford, please write faster.
P.S. Was the "Randy White" character a nod to novelist Randy Wayne White?

"Another great book from John Sandford"

John Sandford's "Prey" series audiobooks are my favorites. I own them all and have heard each one several times. Yet, I haven't been much of a Virgil Flowers fan. I've listened to the other books about Virgil, but didn't like them as much as the "Prey" books. However, "Mad River" is different - this book is great!

"Mad River" is intriguing, entertaining and satisfying. The characters are believable and the book is so well written that the reader feels the maddening frustration of the law enforcement officers involved. Eric Conger does a wonderful job, as always. In this book he does an especially good job of distinguishing the different personalities of Lucas Davenport and Virgil. I have already recommended this book to others; now I look forward to the next Virgil Flowers adventure.

"Virgil: your guide to the Minnesota underworld"

Sanford is one of the few American mystery writers who can actually write. Crais, Lehane, a few others maybe, but too many seem to be putting their names on stuff written by aspiring English majors who went to too many writing workshops. Rant off, sorry.

But Virgil is always fun, ever ready with a felicitous turn of phrase, like "she had a fondness for little white truck driver pills she bought from little white truck drivers." And later, over a cheeseburger and fries after being on the receiving end of a major asskicking, he feels guilty: "When you get released from a hospital, shouldn't you eat something healthy? Lettuce or something?" ROFL

Eric Conger's narration is pitch perfect -- one of those magic books (in this case, a whole series) where the audio version is way better than reading it yourself.

"Entertaining story, but I honestly don't like..."

    ...Eric Conger's narration..
I've been a fan of John Sandford ever since I picked up a copy of "Rules of Prey" many many years ago I've read, in one form or another, every "Prey" novel that has been published but only became aware of the Virgil Flowers series after I became a member of Audible, so naturally I just had to read them too.

I won't go into too much detail about the story, I personally hate reviews that just regurgitate a book's plot so I'll simply state that I found the story to be entertaining, a couple of nice call backs to the events in some of the earlier "Prey" novels, but to be honest it doesn't stay with you the way some of Sandford's other novels have a tendency to do.
My only real "problem" with the audiobook is Eric Conger's narration, he doesn't seem able or willing to actually "voice" the various characters, at one point early in the novel Lucas Davenport is talking to Virgil about Virgil's vacation and it was difficult for me to figure out who was suppose to be speaking, by comparison, Richard Ferrone in the Prey series is able to easily switch between Lucas and Virgil and make it clear who is speaking.just by the tone/inflection of the character.
Conger isn't as bad as some of the "old school" Books on Tape readers, but he's just not an engaging narrator.

"Great Listen, Very Worth A Credit !!"

Not sure why people thought JS was asleep at the wheel, I've listened to all in the series now but because of the negative reviews (shouldn't have listened to them) skipped this one until now. I thought this book delved a bit deeper into the criminal mind, their actions and thoughts. Was not just Virgil and friends. Im not a reviewer normally but I buy and listen to at least 10 books a month and truly thought this was a great addition to the Virgil Flowers series.
