Publisher's Summary

It's Christmas Day in the sleepy town of Sorenson, Wisconsin, but instead of unwrapping presents, deputy coroner Mattie Winston is at the burnt remains of a house where a charred body has been found. The victim is none other than Jack Allen - a paraplegic who recently won a huge casino jackpot. Upon closer inspection, Mattie and detective Steve Hurley are convinced Jack was murdered to steal his winnings, giving the phrase blackjack a whole new meaning.... But as Mattie investigates, even her cutting-edge forensic skills keep coming up short in a case with as many suspects as twists. After her odds-on-favorite turns up dead, Mattie and Hurley must race to find a killer before another victim cashes in his chips.

"Mattie, Mattie, What are you doing?"

A lot of reviewers were very annoyed by this book and the sheer number of stupid things Mattie manages to do in it. I agree it is frustrating behavior for someone we have been regarding as a smart woman. Also, I agree with others who say the amount of disasters in the book is really over the top. It reads more like an action movie that a mystery. But I certainly did enjoy parts very much. The Mattie and Hurley build up is a lot of fun, and there is a scene with a drunken Mattie that was priceless, despite the fact that the narrator is really bad at drunk voices. And if the book hasn't driven you mad by the end there is the up and down of the cliffhanger ending that had me starting the next book within five minutes of this one. But since this is a mystery I should say something about the mystery part. There are two deaths being investigated in the book, and I have to say I am not sure what the author was thinking with the secondary death. It was a downer and didn't showcase anything good about Mattie and Hurley (who I notice both seem to like to play bad cop and feel ok bullying anyone involved in any capacity with a suspicious death). The main mystery was better. Book definitely kept my interest throughout.

    "humorous and fun"

If it wasn't for bad luck, Mattie would have no luck at all. She and Hurley continue to figure out crimes and their relationship. However the crimes of Sorenson are no match to their relationship. This is a great read and I look forward to listening to the next book.

"Not her best work in this book."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This story was in a word..depressing. I didn't care for the main mystery, the secondary mystery, and what Mattie kept getting herself into. If I had known this previously, I would have just read a summary and moved on to the next book. I listened to it while walking, so at least I don't feel like I wasted too much of my time. Other readers might like this story, but I didn't connect with it at all.

Has Lucky Stiff turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I have enjoyed all the other books, but I won't read this one again.

Have you listened to any of Jorjeana Marie’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She is the same, and gives the same professionalism here, it's the story, not her.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed, but someone else might like it. You never know.

    "Great story, not great narrator"

While the story is really enjoyable the narrator sounds like she has a stuffy nose which can be distracting and she gives some of the characters very odd accents when they are speaking.

    "Most depressing book"

I've enjoyed this series, I'm re-reading for the third time, but the stupidity And self-destructive behavior in this episode is a real downer. Not fighting for the settlement she deserves, gambling away over $100k, quitting her job before talking it over with Hurley and Izzy--and Molinari. The embedded murders were a relief in comparison to Mattie's life. And then the ending....... Not. Feel good story this time.

"Maddie Goes Back to Middle School"

I enjoyed the previous books in this series because Maddie (mid 30s) was engaging, smart and very humorous. However, in Lucky Stiff spunky Maddie reverted to acting like an immature, dim-witted adolescent, and not in a cute way.

When Maddie was told that she and police officer Hurley can't have a personal relationship while they are working together, she assumed that SHE must choose between the job she loved and the man she wanted to love. Really? Maddie didn't ask Hurley to quit his job, just assumed that her career was less important than a man's job.

While the author can write humor and mystery, she seems to have bizarre and antiquated ideas about romantic relationships. Maddie was uncomfortable with her "overweight" body size, insecure about her ability to attract & hold a man's interest and unable to communicate her honest feelings. Middle school all over again...

"decent story ruined by lack of oversight"
What did you like best about Lucky Stiff? What did you like least?

It's a decent cozy and I liked the characters. Descriptions of the ME's duties and evidence gathering are easily understood, not overly wordy and fit well into the story. The performance in all the books in this series don't seem to have been proofed after the recording. There are long pauses in the middle of sentences, syllables are cut off and sentences run together. I listened to all the books in the series so far and there hasn't been any improvement.

Would you be willing to try another book from Annelise Ryan? Why or why not?

In the future I may try her again. I got used to her nasal voice and she does a very good job with varied voices but her inexperience shows. She doesn't always maintain the same voice for her characters which causes some confusion and her pronunciation of words both medical and non-medical is too irritating. These errors should have been caught and corrected before release.

How could the performance have been better?

The recording should have been proofed!

Do you think Lucky Stiff needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    Already done

Sci-fi, detective, cozy. Only give 5s to those books I think stand above the rest. 4 is a good solid book. 3 is average, nothing special.

Decent little story line. Kind of an abrupt ending. I'll probably continue with the series.
