What the Critics Say

"Imaginative, empathetic, genuine, and fun, Lowcountry Boil is a lowcountry delight." (Carolyn Hart, Author of What the Cat Saw)

"It's a simmering gumbo of a story full of spice, salt, heat and shrimp. She had me guessing, detouring for a few laughs then doubling back for another clue right until the last chapter." (The Huffington Post)

    "Enjoyable book, not-so-enjoyable narrator"

Enjoyable, light mystery. However, I would not recommend the audio version. I'm not from South Carolina, nor am I great with identifying regional accents, but something about the narrator's accent didn't ring true; it sounded forced to me. Also, the sound quality was not up to par for most Audible productions. Read the book in print instead.

    "Pleasant surprise"

I passed this book up several times before finally giving it a chance. I'm glad I decided to listen to it. It was very entertaining. The characters were realistic and intersting. The plot was believable and nicely paced. This was an enjoyable book and I will buy the next in the series.

    "Great Story"
    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the story and thought the main character was very likeable. Like other reviewers, I thought the narrator's performance was really lacking. The "southern" (in quotes because I think that's what she was going for, but fell short) accent came and went, she used the exact same voice for all the characters, and paused in really weird places. Once I got used to the narrator I didn't mind as much, but I wouldn't buy another book narrated by her. I will definitely buy the 2nd book in this series.

    "Excellent & witty dialogue"

Totally enjoyed this story about going home to a small southern island where everyone knows everyone else. Susan Boyer delivers humorous dialogue, family squabbling, a murder mystery, romantic complications and a friendly ghost. Excellent entertainment for commuting!

"Took a chance, glad I did!"
Where does Lowcountry Boil rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The story was interesting, the characters quirky but relatable, and the narrator added the right amount of performance to the read. I'm always hesitant to pick a book and author I know nothing about...but I'm glad I did!

    "Disappointed"
What did you like about this audiobook?

Nothing. The book had good reviews, and I was very disapointed that it turned out to be bad. The story was boring and the performance was lifeless.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

    No

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

No personality into the characters a flat performance.
