Publisher's summary

Only the money was real. Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. Bosch got off a shot that struck one of the robbers as their van sped away, but the money was never recovered. And the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

Now Bosch moves full-bore back into that case, determined to find justice for the young woman. Without a badge to open doors and strike fear in the guilty, he learns afresh how brutally indifferent the world can be. But something draws him on, past humiliation and harassment. It's not just that the dead woman had no discernible link to the robbery. Nor is it his sympathy for the cops who took the case over, one of them killed on duty and the other paralyzed by a bullet in the same attack. With every conversation and every thread of evidence, Bosch senses a larger presence, an organization bigger than the movie studios and more ruthless than even the LAPD. The part of Bosch that will never back down finds as fatal an opponent as he's ever encountered - and there's no guarantee that Bosch will survive the showdown ahead.

Don't miss Detective Harry Bosch on the case in these Michael Connelly crime fiction novels.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Mystery, Fiction, 2004

"It's never pretty watching Harry [Bosch] edge toward connection with those he loves and then back away...but it just may be the most compelling train wreck in crime fiction." (Booklist, Starred Review)
"This exciting procedural is as good as any in the series." (Publishers Weekly)

This is the best book I've listened to so far

I've enjoyed a number of other books audited via Audible.com, but Lost Light is the best so far. Gripping story, Michael Connelly's books are now all on my Wish List.

And Len Cariou is probably the best narrator I've listened to. Certainly, his voice and narration style are _perfect_ for hard boiled detective novels.

Not the best Bosch, but a good story

Great narrator! We got a little tired of some of the repetitive moments like the woman singing (groan), some of the similes cracked us up and were not supposed to! The story line is a great one and we were surprised so that is good, just not his best writing!

I loved this entire Bosch series

Sometimes the reader's voice were not the best for Harry Bosch's voice; but the story is so good, you get beyond it. In this story, Mr. Connelly gave Harry's career a great ending and Len Cariou did a great job. I now need another detective's career to follow.

If you could sum up Lost Light: Harry Bosch Series, Book 9 in three words, what would they be?

Necessary for series

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not really. I enjoyed the plot but it wasn't as suspenseful as some prior books. That said, if
you're reading in order this is a must read.

What about Len Cariou’s performance did you like?

His performance of Cross, and he gives a performance. I imagine it was difficult to perform that character. Some reviewers say it grates on them, but that's what someone sounds like on a machine. Cariou did an amazing job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last chapter

Any additional comments?

This book is vital to the continuity of the series.

Best one so far

After some mediocre performances in past iterations, this is the perfect Harry Bosch. Also wonderful use of music - the first time I've heard it ever effectively used in an audio book.
Story itself is great as well. Must-Listen for any Bosch fan.

It was great!

I enjoyed this book. Pace was a little slower than some of them the previous books, but that worked given the lack of a badge. on to the next...

One of my favorites!

I was almost ready to give up after book #8, but #9 hooked me and I cannot wait to read #10. Good story line, a bit of suspense and a sweet conclusion.
