Publisher's summary

Undeterred by world war and enemy submarines, Amelia Peabody, grandmaster Elizabeth Peters' indomitable archaeologist-sleuth, once again sets sail for Egypt, where ghosts of an ancient past and specters of a present-day evil hover silently over an inscrutable land.

With son Ramses, his wife, Nefret, and a few unwelcome additions in tow, the elder Peabody-Emersons embark on a dangerous sea voyage to Alexandria, ultimately ending up in Cairo for their annual excavations. But in this autumn of 1915 the exotic, alluring city is not what it used to be. Cairo has been transformed into an armed camp teeming with enemy agents, and shockingly bold tomb robbers are brazenly desecrating the ancient sites.

Amelia's foremost priority is to prevent the War Office from pressing Ramses into service again, on the same sort of job that almost cost him his life the previous year. But in these terrible days of global conflict and relentless skullduggery, no place in Egypt is safe. Even remote Luxor provides no guarantee of safety, especially after Amelia discovers a fresh corpse resting in an ancient tomb.

The grim discovery presages further trouble for the Emersons, as the sinister conundrum pulls them all into a bubbling morass of corruption, intrigue, and international espionage deeper and more fiendish than any they have hitherto encountered. Death follows death, with abduction and an assault on Amelia herself intensifying the chaos of a world at war.

Yet there is an even darker danger in store for the Emersons. Can it be that one of Amelia's oldest and most dangerous adversaries will intervene to alter the family's destiny? Tantalizing clues suggest that this may be so and point toward an archaeological discovery of unparalleled importance, and the resurrection of a voice that has been silent for millennia.

Excellent as always

If you could sum up Lord of the Silent in three words, what would they be?

These stories are light entertainment, but the interpretation by Barbara Rosenblat make them a delight to hear.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I like the not too heavy intrigue and the not so unbelievable plots. The tongue in cheek humor is most entertaining.

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

Her voicing of different characters is impeccable. I always know who is speaking from her tone, accent, and timbre.

Not her best one!

Would you try another book from Elizabeth Peters and/or Barbara Rosenblat?

I love this series and have enjoyed listening to book after book for some time. Barbara Rosenblat is an extremely talented narrator, able to come up with a number of different character voices that suit each one perfectly!

Has Lord of the Silent turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, it hasn't turned me off, but in listening to this one I found my mind wandering more than I had before...

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Barbara Rosenblat is amazing. I love the way she comes up with expressions, like Emerson clearing his throat, as well as many distinct voices... Brilliant.

Elizabeth Peters is a delightful author

I love this Amelia Peabody series. The heroine is a feisty woman based in the late 1800's early 1900's. I have always been interested in Egyptology and this is a wonderful mystery series set in this context. Early feminine Activist. Great humor and character development.

From THUNDER to SILENCE

Bringing back all the primary Family
into a changed Egypt during the 1st World War, Amelia tends to the
" normal ". Yes its back to liers and thieves, troublesome visitors and dead bodies. It is also to let Nefret and Ramses finally be together.
Loved the book, its many twists and unexpected off roads. Always looking for the next book, and never wanting the one I'm reading to end.

Rip Off

I guess that Audible can't be blamed if Harper only offers the next 3 Amelia Peabody books in abridged but I feel I am being ripped off since I am charged a whole credit for less than 1/2 the book. Luckily I have previously read these books so I can fill in the missing parts. Barbara Rosenblat could read a telephone book and make it exciting.

Such a great series!

I love this series! I wish they would make it a show. By BBC or something. *hint hint*
No swearing, no describing sex scenes, quite innocent. And a great narrator, unlike some audio books.
Highly recommend!

Excellent story...needs to be unabridged.

If you could sum up Lord of the Silent in three words, what would they be?

Interesting, exciting, engrossing.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy all the Amelia Peabody books because of the characters. They are the best part of the story.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

Emerson. I love Emerson.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Indiana Jones before there WAS Indiana Jones.

Any additional comments?

I do wish an unabridged version could be found. When the book ended, I was actually surprised and wondered what had been cut out in the story.

I absolutely LOVE the series... but

I'm really disapointed that this and the next 2 books are in abridged format only. I feel like I've missed so much. The humor, the family interactions. There is so much that seems to be not there.

I guess abridged is better than no book at all (what did happen at the Hipo pool?) still, I really miss the feelings of the series in this book. 6 hours is just not enough. I need my "the Emersons" Fix. Because it is abridged I just can't give it the full 5 stars.

lORD OF THE SILENT

I WAS DISSAPOINTED IN THE ABRIDGED VERSION. I LOVE EVERY UNABRIDGED AMELIA PEABODY BOOK BY ELIZABETH PETERS. WITHOUT THE ADDED DETAILS, THE BOOK IS FAR LESS INTERESTING. I WISH AUDIBLE WOULD CARRY ALL OF THE UNABRIDGED TITLES IN THIS SERIES.
