Lonesome Road | [Patricia Wentworth]

Lonesome Road

There were times when Rachel Treherne fervently wished that her beloved father had left his fortune to somebody else, so overburdened did she feel with the administration of the estate. And never more so than now for, although she was surrounded by relatives who depended on her, whom she loved and who must surely love her, there was no doubt in her mind that somebody was trying to kill her.

Threatening letters could be ignored, odd tasting chocolates can be rejected but when snakes are left in her bed, Rachel is convinced that someone means her terrible harm. Her only chance of a future life lay with Miss Silver, and Miss Silver was well on the way to unmasking the murderer when they struck again.

    "Scrmptious Classic British Mystery"

Written in the style of Agatha Christie, full of interesting twists and characters you love to hate as well as characters you love to love, this is a thoroughly captivating and satisfying mystery, well crafted and nicely written. Narration is just great.

"EASY TO MIX UP STORIES IN THIS SERIES"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was something to do. It's certainly not as good as Agatha Christie. I listened to three in this series and Wentworth rehashes the same plots, dialogues, and characters over and over again. A will, a wealthy relative, an American, a bunch of poor relations, one house, a cad, a cousin, a crime, a colorful scarf, Also, Miss Silver is not well-developed and is very uninteresting sleuth.

Would you recommend Lonesome Road to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, there's a market for this kind of book. If you like Miss Marple - and you have read all of those books THREE TIMES EACH - then this series will work.

Which character – as performed by Diana Bishop – was your favorite?

I said "Rachel" in my review of the first book "Grey Mask" but that's because I'd read 3 in a row and they were all basically the same. I got the characters confused in Books 1 and 2. Rachel Treherne was my favorite here.

    Any additional comments?

There's nothing overall wrong with this series. Just don't fall for the description "like Agatha Christie" as I did. Because Wentworth is not even close. These books are good for their era and as long as you wait 6 months between each in the series. I can read Agatha Christie books one after another, even a second and third time each, and still not figure out the plots. I was looking forward to listening to all of this series. However three of these is enough for me!

"One of the best Miss SIlver mysteries"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to someone who enjoys classic "cozy" mysteries, ala Agatha Christie.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lonesome Road?

The suspense of the last few chapters.

Which character – as performed by Diana Bishop – was your favorite?

Miss Silver ~ but overall, Diana Bishop is an excellent reader of all characters, with enough differentiation to make the characters recognizable and enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

All the Miss Silver mysteries have a similar "heroine in jeopardy" plot, and some can be quite dated in terms of the social roles of the 1930s to 1950s. However, the heroine of "Lonesome Road" was strong and interesting, as was the heroine's love interest. Miss Silver is the hero!

"One of the better Miss Silver books"

This third book in the Miss Silver mystery series is above the average for Patricia Wentworth. She always writes a good story, but this one is quite good, with suspense and action, and not as slow moving as others. Diana Bishop does a really excellent job of narrating, making the story quite dramatic.

I am a senior citizen who loves a good mystery, but I object to books with profanity and explicit sexual situations.

    "A nice cozy"

This is a very mild mystery, in the genre of Agatha Christie, etc., IMO. No objectionable language or situations. I thought I had the perpetrator figured out, but I was wrong. The narrator was fine, I had no objections to her performance, that is why I gave her 5 stars. I rated the book 4 stars because it was not an outstanding story, but it DID hold my interest. I feel I would probably listen to another of Wentworth's books.
