Publisher's summary

Jack Ryan Jr.--along with the covert warriors of the Campus--continues to uphold his legendary father’s legacy of courage and honor in this thriller from number one New York Times bestselling author Tom Clancy.

Privately training with special forces, he’s honing his combat skills to continue his work within the Campus, hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can--even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns to become President of the United States again.

But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and personal have just become equally dangerous. A devout enemy of Jack Sr. launches a privately-funded vendetta to discredit him and connect him to a mysterious killing in his longtime ally John Clark’s past. All they have to do is catch him.

With Clark on the run, it’s up to Jack Jr. to stop a growing threat emerging in the Middle East, where a corrupt Pakistani general has entered into a deadly pact with a fanatical terrorist to procure four nuclear warheads they can use to blackmail any world power into submission--or face annihilation.

Lazy writing

The story, of it was a stand-alone, would be great. But as part of the Jack Ryan series, I felt that it was lazy writing. Two particular errors really got on my nerves.
1. Having helped saved Russia from the Chinese invasion less than 8 years prior, I’m supposed to believe that Russia is now anti-Jack Ryan Sr? No explanation was given for this. No mention of Golovko or General Bodarenko or anything. It made no sense to me at all.
2. I believe in the book Sum of All Fears, Ryan took over as DDI of the CIA when the first DDI, Charles Alden died after his affair and pregnant lover were exposed in the media. He died of a massive stroke. And here we have a man with the same name in the CIA administration.
A few sentences of explanation would have solved the Russian issue and a name change would have solved the second. But the author, proofreader, editor, no one caught any of it. As a diehard Clancy Fan, especially of Jack Ryan, it just drove me nuts!

Rush Limbaugh would love this

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would NOT recommend this book to a friend. Rush Limbaugh Fans would love this. The politics of hate are alive and well in the political commentary by the main characters. Gone is the neutrality and honesty of Tom Clancy. In past Jack Ryan Novels, Jack Ryan didn't profess to be partisan, In fact he didn't belong to any political party. Not the case anymore as the main characters indulge themselves in the simplistic Rush Limbaugh view of all things "liberal". A real shame. Tom Clancy used to be a joy to read an listen to. Now not so much. The story line is the usual Tom Clancy evil vs good. Except the characters have lost their depth, the story has become so formula that the ending too predictable. I wish I could have the time back so I could listen to something better written instead of this cheap copy of what Tom Clancy produced in the past. The narrator does a great job. It's a shame the authors weren't as creative as the narrator.

Waiting for next one

Lives up to the Clancy tradition. This book was easy to listen to and not need a flow chart of characters to keep track of like his earlier books. Phillips was able to execute the foreign names and places flawlessly like having lived there. Overall a captivating book that you hated to see the fast paced end come to and as usual leaves you anxiously waiting for the next one.

Lou Diamond does a great job - great plot

Where does Locked On rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

You can envision how real the story line could be ... good sequencing of events and great narration.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Locked On?

The ending set the stage of quite an interesting "next" plot sequence and a little bit of mystery. good way to bring you back -- although one needs little encouragement to open another Jack Ryan / Tom Clancy novel.

What does Lou Diamond Phillips bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is clear that he enjoyed the story line which brought an excitement to the quality of his narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Perhaps knowing that fiction could become reality makes you nervous just how easy facts could be created to suite unsavory agendas and an unknowing public duped by an unknowing press.

excellent

very good material. I have no idea why my review of this material has to be at least twenty words.

excellent some it up in one word. I can only think that minimum verbiage was created by someone who likes to hear them self talk a lot and can't shut up

Lou Diamond Philips is one of the best narrators!

Would you listen to Locked On again? Why?

Once is enough.

What did you like best about this story?

The military speak that Clancy expresses is fantastic. The difficult to pronounce names that Philips breezes through was very well down.

Have you listened to any of Lou Diamond Phillips’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my second with Phillips. The last one was also a Tom Clancy book. I can't wait for the next one.

Very interesting

I love Lou Diamond Phillips as the narrator for this series. He does an excellent job depicting the different accents needed to tell the characters apart. I need to hear the next book to find out if Junior figures out Melanie's duplicity.
