Publisher's summary

Charlaine Harris' popular Southern Vampire mysteries have been described by Publishers Weekly as "humorous Southern-fried fantasy" with a little bit of romance.

In the follow up to Dead Until Dark, telepathic friend of the undead (and vampire bar cocktail waitress) Sookie Stackhouse puts her newfound powers to the test. After an unfortunate incident, Sookie finds herself beholden to a group of Louisiana vampires. So she agrees to travel to Dallas with her undead boyfriend Bill and track down a missing vamp, but only if the vampires promise to let local humans go unharmed. That seems easier said than done when an upstart religious cult threatens to destroy all things vampire - including Sookie, who is quickly scheduled for sacrifice.

Very satisfying 'read'!

I started reading the Sookie Stackhouse series when I watched HBO's Trueblood. The books are, of course, different than the TV show, and I find them much more satisfying. This is book 2 in the series, and I thoroughly enjoy the way Charlaine Harris writes. She has a great ear for dialogue. The narrator, Joanna Parker, does a very fine job in reading the book, and keeping the different characters' voices separate. This book explores how Sookie gets asked by the local head of the vampires, Eric, to go to Dallas and help them (by using her "disability" or gift) with the disappearance of one of their 'nest mates'. Along the way she meets a new, terrifying supernatural creature. Sookie also finds her friend and Merlotte's cook in Andy Bellfleur's car, dead, and is determined to help find the killer. All in all, an adventure-packed read, with wonderful erotic touches thrown in. Very satisfying listen!

Entertaining

What made the experience of listening to Living Dead in Dallas the most enjoyable?

I started with the first book in the series and got interested in the story line due to the narrator. Johanna Porter made this store so much more intertaining. And I went to college in that area, so having some of the places described was that much more entertaining. Reading the books was not as enjoyable, as listening to Johanna's Southern accent! Will continue the series.

Great story telling

Would you listen to Living Dead in Dallas again? Why?

No. However, I never watch a movie twice or read a book twice.

Have you listened to any of Johanna Parker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. She brings the character's to life. The author has written a good story and the reader makes it real. She is one of the reasons I will buy more of these books.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sexy beats Dead.

Any additional comments?

I listen to books when I am doing long workouts. These books make me want to work out more.

Pretty good addition to the series :)

3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good addition to the series. Sookie and Bill are still together and doing well overall (although they do have a few problems in the story). They get sent to Dallas by Eric (Bill's Vampire boss) so that Sookie can use her special abilities to help out with a supernatural situation there. They get through that alright but there are some issues closer to home that they also have to deal with. The story ends with things settled and Sookie and Bill together and doing well.

I enjoyed this story. I still like Sookie and Bill although Bill was maybe a bit less likable in this story than the first. Still, I thought they made a good couple. The story was pretty good and seemed a bit better paced than the first one. Overall, I liked it and would recommend it. :)

* FYI, the last 30 minutes of the audio version is actually a preview of the next book.

An entertaining listen! Spectacular narrator!

This narrator breathes so much life into every line, you'll feel like there's a whole cast! The intonations and fluctuations in her voice are able to convey every emotion. You can even tell when a character is lying! She's truly a treat to listen to.

The story is entertaining and decently written. It's a fun piece of fiction with some twists and turns, and makes for perfect listening distraction while working on mindless task.
