Publisher's summary

Charlaine Harris' popular Southern Vampire mysteries have been described by Publishers Weekly as "humorous Southern-fried fantasy" with a little bit of romance.

In the follow up to Dead Until Dark, telepathic friend of the undead (and vampire bar cocktail waitress) Sookie Stackhouse puts her newfound powers to the test. After an unfortunate incident, Sookie finds herself beholden to a group of Louisiana vampires. So she agrees to travel to Dallas with her undead boyfriend Bill and track down a missing vamp, but only if the vampires promise to let local humans go unharmed. That seems easier said than done when an upstart religious cult threatens to destroy all things vampire - including Sookie, who is quickly scheduled for sacrifice.

Get voice

I appreciate this Charlaine Harris' series, it is fun, consistent in the level of quality throughout, and this one in particular has good plot development. But, this series is better on audio than in book. I listen to a lot of audio books, and I have never (with the exception of his holiness Jim Dale) heard a better voice actor. Not only does her voice fit the story, but she is emotional yet soothing. Get this series on audio, despite the costs, its worth it.

enjoyed it but was not in love with it

This is the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series I enjoyed it but was not in love with it. In this book Sookie and her vampire boyfriend Bill have to go to Dallas to help out a nest of vampires that need Sookie to use her “disability” to help find a missing nest brother. There are some series that I start and cannot wait to get to the next book and this is not really one of them for me. They are good books but not great in my opinion. They are the books I buy when I am stuck on something to listen too but do not have anything lined up. I find that when I am listening to them I don’t want to stop I want to keep listening but when the book is over I can listen to a few other books before going on to the next book in this series. I do like that Sookie can pretty much take care of herself and is not a weak figure, she knows who she is and what she wants and that is refreshing to see. I will probably get them all and am excited about the next two (books 3 and 4) because they have gotten really good reviews. I suggest this book to adult readers who want something a little funny with a down to earth main character. I enjoyed the narrator and think that she gives the perfect voice to Sookie.

The Best Narrarator Since.....

Ok - I saw another review some place that indicated that the Sookie narrarator was as good or better than Jim Dale (of the Harry Potter audio). Of course this peaked my interest, as no one is as good as Jim! Although, Johanna Parker is neck in neck with him. She so thouroughly pulls you into the story with each character, situation, etc. She really understands the author's intent and has you laughing out loud! I love this series. If you like the whole paranormal/vampire genre (with a little romance and LOTS of humor) this series is for you!

She makes the unbelievable believable!

Sookie Stackhouse Series is a MUST read! I have listened/read all of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, 1 - 8. I enjoyed every single one of them. The writing is good, clear, suspenseful and humorous. The narrator, Johanna Parker, does some of the best narrating I have heard...exactly the way I would presume Sookie Stackhouse would sound. You can't go wrong with this series. I CAN'T WAIT until installment NINE!!

Just as good as the first book

Charlaine Harris does it again.
The same narrator is used from the first book and she does not dissapoint.

If you enjoyed the first book, then you will enjoy the second installment as well.

Amazing!

I have heard a lot about these books and tried the first one and loved it. I got the second one, thinking it wouldn't be as good..... and it was! I am now totally addicted and am going slowly mad waiting for my credits so I can find out what happens to Sookie next. I love the narrator and I'm glad she is southern, it makes Sookie real.

Cool

Because of the True Blood series, I began reading this series, and I love it. Recommend it highly.

Differences

As I listened to this audio book, Living Dead in Dallas, I couldn't help but compare it to the television adaptation, True Blood. I have to say that in this instance, the series is much better than the book, which I found odd considering that in my opinion, 9 out of 10 times the book is much better. It's a great book, but Alan Ball the director of True Blood has done an outstanding job of making the series much less boring than the books and giving it the flair and drama that the books lack. I give the book a thumbs up, but I give the series 2 thumbs up.

Book 2 is as good as the first!

Another thoroughly enjoyable, fast and easy fiction about vampires, shapeshifters, discrimination, violence, love and lust.

There is a little more mystery/suspense than in the first book in this series, and a bit less romance. But the sex scenes are a bit more graphic (not detailed graphic, kinda glossed over, yet more graphic than the first book's).

If you want to spend a lot of time thinking, or trying to figure out a mystery, this isn't the book for that, but if you want light and enjoyable fiction, give it a whirl. I am already starting the next book in the series.

The narration is excellent.
