Publisher's summary

“A suspenseful roller-coaster ride.” (Karin Slaughter)

“Lisa Gardner always delivers heart-stopping suspense.” (Harlan Coben)

He knows everything about you - including the first place you’ll hide.

On a warm summer night in one of Boston’s working-class neighborhoods, an unthinkable crime has been committed: Four members of a family have been brutally murdered. The father - and possible suspect - now lies clinging to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye.

Danielle Burton is a survivor, a dedicated nurse whose passion is to help children at a locked-down pediatric psych ward. But she remains haunted by a family tragedy that shattered her life nearly 25 years ago. The dark anniversary is approaching, and when D. D. Warren and her partner show up at the facility, Danielle immediately realizes: It has started again.

A devoted mother, Victoria Oliver has a hard time remembering what normalcy is like. But she will do anything to ensure that her troubled son has some semblance of a childhood. She will love him no matter what. Nurture him. Keep him safe. Protect him. Even when the threat comes from within her own house.

The lives of these three women unfold and connect in unexpected ways, as sins from the past emerge - and stunning secrets reveal just how tightly blood ties can bind.

Sometimes the most devastating crimes are the ones closest to home.

Critic reviews

"Gardner never sensationalizes her story, and the book ends with a resolution that is creatively and emotionally appropriate. An excellent novel." ( Booklist)

Great Read!

Would you listen to Live to Tell: A Detective D. D. Warren Novel again? Why?

I wouldn't listen to it again only because I never listen to a book twice. But I highly recommend this book!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Definitely! It was very exciting from start to finish.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All of these narrators are wonderful in everything they read.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were flirty parts that made me smile. Other scary parts that made me cringe.

Fantastic!

Lisa Gardner wrote the best mystery I’ve read in a long time. The narrators made it come to life. Had me guessing till the end.

Disturbing subject matter, but good crime story

Wow, this one jumps around a LOT, multiple POV, and in the first few chapters, I was confused whose story line it was on, as I don't listen to the end of a chapter always.
I kept thinking about returning in the first half, because of subject matter, and the disjointed story lines.
It comes together about half way through, and the different story lines converge towards the climax.

Overall it is good book, and interesting story lines, but it seemed to me to be less DD Warren than other books in the series.

Some, ok, a great deal of the subject matter was difficult to listen to. But overall a well told crime story.
Recommend with reservations

Another Bone-Chilling and Heart-Warming Tale

The narrators were fantastic and the novel even more so. It was creepy and captivating but also glowing with love. This will for sure be added to my favorites along with another novel by Lisa Gardner: Catch Me

hard to take the topic

This plot hit too close to home for me to say I enjoyed or recommend the book, however it’s reality and I did finish the book. I can say the book was compelling and I kept listening hoping for a miracle.
