The most decorated homicide detective in NYPD history, Dave Gurney, is trying to adjust to his life of quasi-retirement when a young woman who is producing a documentary on a notorious murder spree seeks his counsel. Soon after, Gurney begins feeling threatened: a razor-sharp hunting arrow lands in his yard, and he narrowly escapes serious injury in a booby-trapped basement. As things grow more bizarre, he finds himself reexamining the case of The Good Shepherd, which 10 years before involved a series of roadside shootings and a rage-against-the-rich manifesto.
The killings ceased, and a consensus opinion developed that no one would dream of challenging - except Dave Gurney. Mocked even by some who'd been his supporters in previous investigations, Dave realizes that the killer is too clever to be found. The only gambit that may work is also the most dangerous - to make himself a target and get the killer to come to him.

"Dave Gurney returns!"
This is the third outing for Dave Gurney, the retired, highly respected, New York detective.
I'd read/listened to the two previous offerings and couldn’t wait for the third book to become available in the UK.
Fans of Dave will not be disappointed by this latest offering and I urge new listeners to try him too.
It is read by the excellent Jeff Harding (who also narrates Lee Child's Jack Reacher stories)
If you enjoy the books of Lee Child, Robert Crais and John Connelly then this author is for you!
I think "Let the Devil Sleep" should come under the heading of an unputdownable book. I tried to stagger my listening over a period of time but it didn't work. Now I am listening to it all over again. Jeff Harding is brilliant in his narration. He has the ability to be able to change his voice to suit his subject with great ease which leaves you in no doubt as to who the character is. I would seriously recommend this audio book, it is a brilliant listen.
"Another Brilliant Listen"
I'm picking books a new way as I've run out of authors so going with anything read by Jeff Harding - John Vardon doesn't disappoint can't wait to read more. Great characters, well written enthralling plots. So far my strategy is paying off.
"Let the devil sleep"
Another great book by john verdon. This was his third that I've heard and cant wait fir the next to come out in Dave Gurney's series
"Dave Gurney getting himself in trouble again"
Harry Bosch - love the detective thrillers
I've read all 3 Dave Gurney books & have enjoyed them.
The retired decorated NYPD detective who never seems to be retired for long before he dragged back into another murder.
Jeff Harding brilliant as ever
Story that carried me along all the way through with strong characters woven into a great plot

"Not quite as good as #1 and #2"
For some reason, this one didn't gel quite as well as the first two - and I am struggling to work out why. The story seemed more perfunctory, and maybe more formulaic. Some of the details also didn't get carried through - for example, his concern for Kim's safety all the way through until the end, where he packed her off to a hotel, and she was pretty much forgotten for the rest of it.
I liked Madeleine more in this book (softer) but didn't like Hardwick as much as in #2. And I was interested by Gurney's character development after the troubles he experienced in #2. Although I'm not sure I'm convinced by his continued death-wish. You'd think after the first two books, he might have a healthier regard for his own life, especially with the increased family ties in this book.
I see from the Amazon reviews of #4 in the series that its very poorly regarded, and there doesn't appear to be an audio version. I may try and find a paper version, but perhaps I won't and will just leave this as a really enjoyable trilogy!
