Novel? Novella? story?

Eliza heard the words retirement and club followed by gunfire. It was over quickly, and they were gone...with her voice. A pregnant ex-assassin has days to recall a lifetime, retrieve two stolen chips that control the US defense system and save two children from termination by the Club, which trained her. Only she can't remember the Club, and the children belong to the woman she terminated, and the Club wants them dead.

My first issue was to decide if this is a very short novel, a very long short story, or a medium length novella. I do realize that the rules for length or even for what is considered a book don’t really apply to digital publications, and that the appropriate length for a full length novel was determined mostly by marketing departments, but I guess I’m old fashioned about some things. What I *am* sure of is that I would almost never spend an Audible credit on such a short work, and unless there were compelling reasons to do so, would be unlikely to pay cash for it, either.

In addition, this was one of the most well written and most confusing works of fiction I’ve read in a very long time. The author uses language beautifully, can set a mood, describe action, and even create very believable dialog. But I still have no idea what either the club or their adversaries are, or what role they actually play. I could have wished that the author had taken the time and space to provide a stronger foundation, so that we knew, for example, if the Club is a rogue Federal agency, a Terrorist group, or a far less than legal commercial enterprise. Same with the Watchers. Who are they, and for whom do they work?

I found the characters to be more than a little stereotypical, too. The “good ones” were way too saintly, the children too angelic, (not to mention absolutely beautiful), and the villains absolutely and unrelievedly villainous. Even the few who were supposed to be “good guys” in disguise didn’t work well, for me.

The only way I can make this book “work” in my mind is as an allegory, but again, I’m not sure what that allegory would be about. Good and evil? Sin and redemption? Possible, I suppose, but not especially interesting, at least not to this reader.

The narration was extremely professional in every way, and the narrator uses her voice to excellent effect.

I give the narrator 4 stars and the book 3 stars.

Suspenseful, Surprising and Confusing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes it was. It was a suspenseful and surprising story.

Would you recommend Lead Us Not to your friends? Why or why not?

It would not be my first choice for a recommendation. However as a short unique listen, I would recommend it to some one who liked this genre.

Which character – as performed by Christa Lewis – was your favorite?

Sam.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

If the movie was as confusing as the book probably not.

Any additional comments?

The book was suspenseful and confusing filled with surprises. If one holds in there most of the confusion will clear up. However there are still unanswered questions primary just who and what is "The Club" and who or what are "The Watcher's"? We get that they are some type of covert agencies and that The Club are the bad guys. However that is the only explanation.

If the confusion had been more effectively erased clean I would of given the book 4 instead of 3 stars. All in all if you're in the mood for a short unique thriller, this would be a good choice.

Great Potential I'll Look Fore More By Author

'The Club' has several missions going at once. I feel like this book may be in the middle of the series because I wasn't really introduced to any of the characters and what I learned was pretty minimal.

Three sisters are in different states of being kidnapped or held hostage. Actually it's two sisters and a brother; the brother makes himself look like a girl. He plays the older sibling to his sister. The other sister seems to be much older as she is pregnant. She is in the hospital with amnesia about a horrific husband and whispers of 'The Club'.

It was well written and I hope that this is a series, because I really enjoyed the writing, the actions and the emotion. Please put more of these up on Audible!

Christa Lewis' narration was professional and easy to follow – once I learned who each character was – not the narrator's fault. I hope there are more books and read by this narrator. Excellent job!

There are no warnings here other than the threats of death. It is not graphic or descriptive, just be alert if that's not your thing.

Thank you for reading this review. I was given this book in exchange for my review. My review was not influenced by this at all. Please feel free to check my other reviews as you will find some that are good because it's a good book and some that were lacking because performer or author was not just standards.

Please select yes below if you think that my review helps you in deciding whether or not to purchase or read this book. Thank you

Lead Me!

Hey, what a nice good surplice of a book! "The Club" is after Eliza, and i want to follow her story! Yes it is a bit weird written, yes there are points of the book you go "Oh, this is going to happened" and then it does- Still. One book i will remember. Lead Us Not by Youlanda Brewster is that book, and surprise: I liked it!

Christa Lewis is a part of why i liked it that much. I think Christa Lewis is reading just right, with 2 hrs and 22 mins to do it on! And she does. This book is somwhat weird, and i feel like 2 hrs and 22 min without Christa Lewis would be worse. Still there is something i do miss a bit in, and that is voice work for different characters! Other then that shie is close to perfect!

Twists and Turns you didn't expect

Where does Lead Us Not rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As a new book from a new writer, it was quite a good listen. Had me paying attention so that I would miss nothing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lead Us Not?

Trying to figure the story out while you listen to it. Not as easy as some books are.

What about Christa Lewis’s performance did you like?

The different voices she does and her enthusiasm she exudes while she reads this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but if I tell you now what it is, I'll spoil the story.

Any additional comments?

Good book for a new author.
