Publisher's summary

Brash, brilliant, handsome Nicholas Deketomis has built a highly successful career as a lawyer, protecting the rights of the innocent while winning multibillion-dollar lawsuits from the powers that be. "Deke" may have come from the wrong side of the tracks, but he's built a wonderful life for his close-knit family. His wife and two children live in a beautiful house in a seaside community along the Florida Panhandle.

But their comfortable life is endangered. In the midst of a highly contentious lawsuit against a powerful pharmaceutical company, as well as publicly advocating for a liberal Florida State Senate candidate, this time Deke may have riled the wrong powerbrokers. Scheming against him are a local Bible-thumping preacher, an ambitious district attorney, and two malicious brothers running one of the country's biggest oil corporations. A vile conspiracy is hatched to bring down Deketomis; setting him up and attempting to convict him on a bogus murder charge would solve many of their problems.

Deke is in the trial of his life, which quickly becomes a media circus. But this good man will not go down without a bruising fight - especially when he finds his family threatened. And just as it seems that his enemies may have him cornered, he finds help from the unlikeliest source.

Don't Bother

Although I have been an Audible member for years listening to over 1000 books, I have never felt so compelled to write a review. This book started out okay but became increasingly political with each chapter. I stopped listening after Chapter 15 because it felt like the author's whole mission was to get all of his liberal political views into one book. Nauseating!

Not one I would reccomend

This could have been a great story, had it not subjected Zeke's political opinions and inaccuracy's.

When reading a novel I do not want the author or his characters to insert thier political beliefs on the reader. It took a lot to not turn it off.

Lecture on liberal moral superiority

I should have READ the reviews not just looked at the stars. The base story was good and held my interest enough to put up with the pulpit lecture on the corrupt morals of the conservatives. The author should have stopped at developing his character as a strong left leaning activist and proceeded with the story. But instead he used this book as a platform to lecture the reader on the moral superiority of the left and how corrupt the conservatives are. We get enough politics on the liberally dominated media, from ALL platforms, I don’t need to hear it when I listen to FICTIONAL books for enjoyment to escape all of that.

Great book, but heavy on left political leanings

While I appreciate that tort law lends itself to left political leanings, this tale is full of commentary on corporate financing of politicians, yet fails to mention how much money unions pump into political campaigns every year (particularly in California). The story line was great, but got a little tiresome with the political preaching.

Don’t need the political crap

Write a story not a political opinion. Would have been good if you could have done that

When Will They Realize?

When will authors and entertainers realize that many people don't want their political views thrown into their stories. We want entertainment. This book started well and then he started knocking conservatives. The story can be told, and told well, without their personal opinion. As we read, we can make up our own minds, and quite often it will be the same as theirs -- if they know how to get their opinions across without knocking us in the head.

I stopped reading and returned the book. I want a good story. If I want a political view, I will get a book that I know is political.

I am not anti-gay, antisemitic, racist, or anything else that I am labeled with. I am anti-socialist and anticommunist. I also may be deplorable -- depending on the mood I am in.

if you like MSNBC you will love this author.

Narrator was good, yes there are some bad corporations but this is beyond the pale.

Awesome

Loved the legal thriller. Would make a great movie or miniseries. Deke was a compelling character and I would love to read more about him.

good story ruined by politics

great narrator! story is intriguing, but the politics got in the way. the author even attempts to make the little kids evil because their parents have a certain political belief. it was tiring. story had a great character and a great plot otherwise.

Awful from the start

This was bad from the outset. The premise is dumb, and the prose dumber. There are better options.
