Publisher's summary

For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at 14, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn - until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence is instead just one horrifying part of a relentless killer’s merciless mission.

Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn the secrets and skills of survival in a dangerous world. But even behind locked gates, and surrounded by acres of sheltering Maine wilderness, Jane fears that Evensong’s mysterious benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. When strange blood-splattered dolls are found dangling from a tree, Jane knows that her instincts are dead on. And when she learns of Will Yablonski and Claire Ward, students whose tragic pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind.

Joining forces with her trusted partner, medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane is determined to keep these orphans safe from harm. But an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate - unless Jane and Maura can finally put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

CSI High School

This reminded me a lot of Heinlein's books for young people. It had really smart kids who handled tough situations and came out on top. There are some gory scenes and scary situations, but after reading Hunger Games by Collins and Rot & Ruin by Maberry, this is exceptable.

I had never heard of the Mephisto Society before, but now I want to find out more and read The Mephisto Club by Gerritsen. Gerritsen is one of my favorite writers this being my 14th book by her.

Gerritsen's writing is often a little simplistic and is especially so in this one. What I usual like is the subject matter she writes about. Her writing is rarely conventional and is usually edgy. She does not go as far as Koontz or King into the weird, but keeps it on the edge of believable.

This is a really good story with a good mystery and some great characters. The last half hour is full of twists within twists. I was a little disappointed in the ending in that it was too many twists in too short a time and the story lost some of it's intrigity. Up until the ending it was a very compelling story. The book as a whole is a five star read and is in my top five of Gerritsen books.

I was not crazy about the narrator, she sounded like she was reading a children's book. She way over did the Boston accent, even putting it in places it did not belong. All of the adult males souned like Yogi Bear. I was waiting for them to ask for Boo Boo and for a Pic-A-Nic Basket.

Unfortunate "reader"

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, but I would recommend reading it, not listening to it.

What other book might you compare Last to Die to and why?

Not sure.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was awful! In trying to lower her voice to a masculine level, she made all of the men sound like dummies, not to mention making an astrophysicist sound like Howdy Doody! What ever possessed the author - who writes these terrific Rizzoli & Isles books - to allow her story to be pulled down to this level? It was hard to listen to.

Could you see Last to Die being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

There IS a TV series :-)

I like her voice, especially the accent she plays for Jane Rizzoli.

Last to Die

Any additional comments?

Last to Die is narrated by Tanya Eby and approximately 10.5 hours of listening. Three tweens are victims, their parents, siblings, and foster parents all die in fires or automobile accidents or are mysteriously assassinated. Why? What do they have in common? Your initial impression is absolutely nothing! Why were these children saved? Thus is the mystery Rizzoli & Isles must solve.

Good story, albeit for my taste, a little longer than necessary. But, that’s just me. Tess Gerritsen has become one of my favorite authors. Every story has merit and I’ve enjoyed them all. Nice plot, interesting premise, well defined characters.

Tess Eby does a good job, you’ll enjoy the narration.

Looking forward to the next! Enjoy.

Good for what it is

A little bit lightweight, but a good listen for a day of housework or some treadmill time. Takes a bit of getting used to if you, as I did, started with the T.V. show.
