Ladies' Bane | [Patricia Wentworth]

Ladies' Bane

Ladies’ Bane – it was a curious name for a house. But visiting it for the first time Ione found it a curious house. Curious, and rather frightening. They said in the village that anyone who was its mistress would lose the thing she cared for most. And its present mistress was Allegra – Ione’s sister. They had not met for two years. Appointments had been made but not kept. Visits had been postponed time and time again. There had been excuse after excuse.

And then, suddenly Ione found herself not only invited but positively urged to come. To begin with she had been puzzled. But soon she was not only worried, but badly, deeply scared… Thank heavens Miss Silver was in town.

love to read and love audio books!Favorite authors: Marcia Willett,Nevil Shute,Mary Stewart, and Jacqueline Winspear. I could go on and on but wont bore you! I belong to a book group and we often" Listen" to the books we have selected for the month while using a paper copy for the discussion notes. It really enhances the quality of the story.

"Another good Mystery from Patricia Wentworth"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A really good clean mystery no foul language or sex....always enjoy the twists and turns in the plots

What other book might you compare Ladies' Bane to and why?

Any other Patricia Wentworth, Agatha Christie or Ngaio Marsh story ... Interesting Plots, smart underestimated "older" detective character and quite fun to read especially if you have been to London and are familiar with the settings and the English countryside.

What does Diana Bishop bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She is a wonderful narrator and makes the book come alive.

    Story
"This was not a bane to hear!"

I have just finished listening to Facebook and it is another atypical Miss Maud Silver story. I thoroughly enjoyed it especially as most of the narrative is enclosed with in a small village and in even smaller household. Without skivvying the plot away, there are plenty of characters many of them to distract and beavered to be called red herring of the plot however you'd be hard pressed to tell which characters are they. The premise is two sisters who have not seen each other for a long time, finally managed to connect. But all is not quite what it seems… so what's going on and who is behind it? Get this novel and find out; you won't regret it.
