Publisher's summary

Call it Kinsey Millhone in bad company. Call it a mystery without a murder, a treasure hunt without a map, a quest novel with truly mixed-up motives. Call it the return of Kinsey as a bad girl, quick-witted and quicksilvery, poking her nose into everybody's dirty laundry as she joins up with a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde in an Our Gang comedy that will take her halfway across the country and leave her with a major headache and an empty bank balance.

America's favorite borderline delinquent is back, with her one-liners on tape and her energy level on high, romping through her fastest and funniest adventure in this, her 12th foray into the alphabet of crime.

Critic reviews

"Grafton exhibits a sharp ear for dialogue and a quarter-horse pace. Her characters are as real as any this side of Elmore Leonard." K Is for Killer offers further proof of Grafton's growth as a writer. This is one mystery series that gains strength with [each] passing letter. (People)
"An adventure that begins straightforwardly enough but quickly twists into a knotted string of untruths." (Publishers Weekly)

Great book

Would you consider the audio edition of L Is for Lawless to be better than the print version?

I love the way Mary Peiffer brings the characters to life and brings the read into the story and keeps you on the edge of your seat through the action scenes.

Have you listened to any of Mary Peiffer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love the way Mary Peiffer brings the characters to life, the new narrator, Judy Kaye, ruins it for me as she makes everyone sounds like they are 40yrs older then what they are in the stories. Where as Mary gives the characters more juice and seem age appropriate instead of whiny antiques that Judy does. I think Sue Grafton screwed up on this one when she changed the narrator and I have since moved away from the series and won't return because of this change.

Not the best

Kinsey’s road trip leaves a lot to be desired. Very dark and empty characters, no great insights. Bits of humor and the story moves along to a bleak end.

Its Lom-POKE... NOT Lom-pahk

Please... pronounce Lompoc correctly: Its Lom-POKE... NOT Lom-pahk. Loved the book, and the series... just hate hearing my hometown's name butchered!

My husband and I have almost all of Sue Grafton's books. We enjoyed all but this one. Must have been an off year.

One of Grafton's Best!

After a couple less than worthy entries in the Kinsey Millhone series (J & K), Sue Grafton roars back with a nicely diverting addition. Yes, you will probably anticipate much of the ending from early clues, but no matter; the ride is enjoyable even if the destination is not too much of a surprise.

Grafton offers some of her best development of secondary characters yet and has now moved well past the two-dimensional characters of her earlier novels. Add in an enjoyable, sometimes exciting plot and a more nuanced Kinsey, and this book is certainly worth a listen.

Even the much maligned (sometimes by me) narrator really steps up with this effort. As best I can tell, every word is correctly pronounced (applause) and dramatic characterizations are much more fully developed. This may not be an ~A~ game yet, but it's certainly a solid B.

You will not regret a decision to escape for a few hours into the Lawless world of Kinsey Millhone.

This book was fast paced, suspenseful, had a great cast of characters, and plot twists. This is one of Sue Grafton's best books.
