Publisher's summary

David Baldacci brings back Sean King and Michelle Maxwell - former Secret Service agents turned private investigators, featured in the hit TNT TV series King & Maxwell - in their most surprising, personal, and dangerous case ever....

It seems at first like a simple, tragic story. Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy, learns the awful news that his father, a soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Then the extraordinary happens: Tyler receives a communication from his father...after his supposed death.

Tyler hires Sean and Michelle to solve the mystery surrounding his father. But their investigation quickly leads to deeper, more troubling questions. Could Tyler's father really still be alive? What was his true mission? Could Tyler be the next target?

Sean and Michelle soon realize that they've stumbled on to something bigger and more treacherous than anyone could have imagined. And as their hunt for the truth leads them relentlessly to the highest levels of power and to uncovering the most clandestine of secrets, Sean and Michelle are determined to help and protect Tyler - though they may pay for it with their lives.

I hope there are more on the way

King and Maxwell are two of my favorite characters. McLarty and Cassidy nailed it. I hope Baldacci comes up with more adventures for these two.

King & Maxwell just keeps getting better.

Good story; I had no idea what would happen next. I enjoy the complex relationship between King and Maxwell, although I don't find it plausible that they work so hard to keep it platonic. Also, it was so good to have the suspense and mystery without endless graphic violence.

A good listen, could do without the accents.

What made the experience of listening to King and Maxwell the most enjoyable?

I have always enjoyed reading David Baldacci's books, the was the first one I've listened to. The storyline as always grabbed my interest early on and held it until the end.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a little different now that I've seen the new series and seen what Baldacci was envisioning. While different than the series there was nothing that jumped out and made it difficult to connect the two, so now I have faces to go with the characters.

Any additional comments?

This was definitely worth listening to. I’m relatively new to audio books having been a reader for about four decades so it was a bit of an adjustment to listening rather than reading. I enjoyed the story quite a lot but was a little put off by the drawl in the voices of the narrators. I envisioned King & Maxwell speaking in a more generic accent, like you would hear on national news for example. I never had trouble understanding the words and the tone was pleasing, but the southern accent, particularly of the woman narrator sometimes brought my mind out of the story a bit. I minor complaint and it won’t stop me from listening to other Baldacci books but unless there is a compelling reason otherwise I would prefer a more neutral accent.

Favorite So Far

This was my favorite book in the series. The story was great and the sound effects enhanced narration brought it all to life. The plot was intertwined with national actors, including POTUS...he was a good guy. The characters were pretty well fleshed out and the reader knows all of them pretty well by the end of the book. What seems well researched, may well be made up, but I couldn't tell that from personal experience. Baldacci seems to increase the tension with writing style, sometimes frustrating if the listen is interrupted. My last book in the series, adios K&M.

Another outstanding Baldacci!

I have to admit I am a Baldaccifile. His easy-going, yet gripping approach to story telling fits my taste perfectly. And this book is no exception. It is brilliantly narrated by the best in the business - Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy. King and Maxwell is escapism with just the right dose of "you know, this could really happen!" Kudos to Mr. Baldacci, his staff, and his publisher for providing me and the rest of his devotees with great entertainment.

Surprisingly pleased -

At the beginning I was unsure if I was going to like this but I was surprised overall. I really like both of the narrators, they have done many David Baldacci books that I have listened to from Audible. This story had many twist and turns, very intertwined. I listen on my daily commute and it was so good I didn't want the commute to end each day! King and Maxwell make a great pair. Their shared history adds many interesting aspects to the story. So as not to be a spoiler I will say the last few chapters were crazy good! I hope there are more adventures planned for K&M.

Best duo series out there

Would you listen to King and Maxwell again? Why?

Yes. They are terrific characters. Each stands alone yet they are great together.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, right up until the end, the villain seemed 1 step ahead.

What does Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

They are both VERY good at altering their voices and the inflection in their voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

More laugh than cry. They are fun characters that make you want to hang out with them.
