Editorial reviews

Spunky, young lawyer Mary DeNunzio becomes passionately entwined in a dusty, old estate settlement involving an Italian-American immigrant who comes to life in Mary's imagination. When an associate is murdered, Mary is convinced it's related to her case and pursues the truth against all odds. Barbara Rosenblat deftly delivers many colorful secondary characters. Her treatment of older people is especially sensitive and credible. She presents the heroine with an almost neutral voice, underplaying Mary's South Philadelphia identity. An interview with the author at the end of the recording provides entertaining insight, especially on the topic of Italian-Americans interned during WWII.

Publisher's summary

Mary DiNunzio gets a terrifying telephone call while she's working late, then goes home to find a shadow lurking at her front door. When a lawyer close to her turns up dead, Mary begins to suspect that the case she's been working on, involving the suicide of an Italian-American in an internment camp during World War II, may not be ancient history after all.

Critic reviews

"Scottoline skillfully weaves a complicated, gripping, and fast-paced tale, at turns comical, nerve-wracking, and enlightening." (Publishers Weekly)

Be sure to listen to her interview at the end.

A very good and important book. I not only enjoyed it, but learned history that I never knew. For me, Lisa Scottoline is an excellent story writer. Her characters are so real. I ordered a hard copy of this because of it's historical importance.

A fun listen

Kept me laughing! Great to indulge in on vacation. I got a real kick out of the narrator who seemed to relish reading the book!

Awful reader -- spoiled the book

This was my first Scottoline book. Although I have heard good things about the author, the narrator was so increadibly annoying that I am having difficulty determining whether the book is just bad or whether my experience has been completely poisoned by the reader. In trying to read in the voices of the characters (including a nauseating cheesy, borderline offensive interpretation of an accented Italian mother), the narrator steals all depth and reality from them.
I will give Scottoline the benefit of the doubt and try another -- but avoid the reader like the plague.

Food in readers mouth

Why would anyone read an audiobook with (I’m assuming gum) food in their mouth. I just can’t with the noises 🤬

Joel

I have most of Lisa Scottoline books. This is the first one I have listened to on Audible. I am not certain whether it was the story or the reader that resulted in a poor presentation. Lisa Scottoline books in the past have used good legal context and plausible plot, but Killer Smile had neither. Also the reader?s vocal adaptation made the lead character voice annoying and less believable.

Three Cheers for Rosenblat!

I have to defend my very favorite audio reader of all time, after reading the awful reviews of 'Killer Smile.' Perhaps the producer did fall down on the job here, but I would implore listeners to try Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series read by Rosenblat; I usually select my audible monthly choices from Rosenblat's performances. I think she has the most incredible facility with voices and accents I have ever heard...and as a performer myself, I am a great admirer of her craft!

Wonderful story - horrible narrator

What did you like best about Killer Smile? What did you like least?

I am always captivated by Lisa Scottoline's novels and this is no exception. It is fast paced and has great character development and detail.

What didn’t you like about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance?

This narrator has a nice enough tone and delivery - and gives a lively performance.BUT. She loudly swallows her spit every few sentences which is extremely off-putting and frankly disgusting to listen to. It ruined this story for me. I will never purchase another book that is narrated by her.

Okay story, awful narration

I have enjoyed Rosenblat's narration of other Scottoline books, but either she was chewing gum or crinkling cellophane while reading this one! I suspect it is the producer who fell down on the job, but in any case, this is not an audio I would ever recommend!

Smack, Smack,

After listening to this audio book for a few hours, I'd wished I hadn't opted for the better quality audio format. The narrator made various annoying noises with her mouth throughout the read. Between her heavy breathing and her smacking I couldn't concentrate on the piece. She just wasn't a good pick for this piece.

Just too 'cutesy'

I couldn't finish listening to this book. I liked Scottoline's other books, but this one was over the top, with the constant interruptions and side comments about Mary. Interrupted the flow, just didn't work. Sounds like a Mary Drew rather than a sophisticated mystery.
And, as several other readers have noted, the reader or the audio was pretty bad. I kept wishing she would just swallow that last morsel and then resuem reading!
