Editorial reviews

Spunky, young lawyer Mary DeNunzio becomes passionately entwined in a dusty, old estate settlement involving an Italian-American immigrant who comes to life in Mary's imagination. When an associate is murdered, Mary is convinced it's related to her case and pursues the truth against all odds. Barbara Rosenblat deftly delivers many colorful secondary characters. Her treatment of older people is especially sensitive and credible. She presents the heroine with an almost neutral voice, underplaying Mary's South Philadelphia identity. An interview with the author at the end of the recording provides entertaining insight, especially on the topic of Italian-Americans interned during WWII.

Publisher's summary

Mary DiNunzio gets a terrifying telephone call while she's working late, then goes home to find a shadow lurking at her front door. When a lawyer close to her turns up dead, Mary begins to suspect that the case she's been working on, involving the suicide of an Italian-American in an internment camp during World War II, may not be ancient history after all.

Critic reviews

"Scottoline skillfully weaves a complicated, gripping, and fast-paced tale, at turns comical, nerve-wracking, and enlightening." (Publishers Weekly)

Barely made three stars

Except for the bonus star this book got because I am an Italian-American, we would have been looking at two stars. The plot was predictable, there were few surprises and Mary, our protagonist, displayed the persona of a high school sophomore. I had to keep checking to make sure I wasn't listening to a Nancy Drew mystery. As a matter of fact, Nancy Drew is probably more mature than Mary DeNunzio. I gave this book a try because I enjoyed Scottoline's 4-star Look Again. This offering didn't come close and will likely dissuade me from trying another one of her books. Scottoline's interview at the end of the book made me feel a little better about what I had just listened to, but not much. The "breathy" narration didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother the majority of reviewers. The book came close to failing all on its own.

so so

The story was OK, but the narrator's voice was irritating to me.

Loved it

I Love all her books. Amazing. I wish the space between chapters was smaller though.

A fun listen

Kept me laughing! Great to indulge in on vacation. I got a real kick out of the narrator who seemed to relish reading the book!

Food in readers mouth

Why would anyone read an audiobook with (I’m assuming gum) food in their mouth. I just can’t with the noises 🤬

Fun bit of history thrown in the mix!

Love history, and Scottoline keeps you guessing, as always. What I really love, though, is the humor. She's hilarious.
This book had a bit of language, but not much, compared to some of her other work (you never know what you are going to get with Scottoline).
Some sexual references and crass talk, but not too much (reference to vibrator for instance, and enjoying sex). Violence was about the same as her other work. I appreciate that she doesn't dwell on violence in a sick way, as some other authors do these days!

Good, However......

I have enjoyed and appreciated most things about Scottoline's books, especially the suspense. I particularly enjoyed the setting and historical significance and enlightening of this book. For me, it was not one of her better ones, by any means. However, the greatest disappointment, that nearly ruined the book for me, was the narrator. Her reading sounded like an overly-enthusiastic 11- or 12-year-old Nancy Drew! It was much too chirpy and childish, and seemed at times as if she was trying to make it humorous, making it was hard to take it seriously at times, especially at any points of potential suspense. When I imagined it being read by a more serious reader, it sounded (in my head) much more palatable. I would recommend this book, with that caveat.

A great novel and history lesson

The book has everything- Humor, intrigue, romance, friendship, etc etc. I loved it. But I have liked this entire series (even if I’m almost 20 years late in reading it).
