Publisher's summary

The investigation of LaShawn Tompkins's murder seemed straightforward enough. Upon his release from death row, the ex-drug-dealer returned to his old neighborhood where he was gunned down on his mother's doorstep. Just another case of turf warfare. At least that's what it looks like on the surface to Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont, who's been handed the assignment under the strictest confidence. But as Beau starts digging, the situation becomes more complicated than he'd thought. It appears that LaShawn really had turned over a new leaf at the King Street Mission and his murder was pre-meditated. Someone had targeted the man for death.

Meanwhile, Beau's lover and fellow cop, Mel Soames, is given her own hush-hush investigation. A routine check on registered sex offenders has revealed a disturbing pattern: they're dying off at an alarming rate, and not all due to natural causes. Details of the latest death suggest an inside job, but Mel isn't letting this go. Suddenly, Mel's investigation becomes entangled with Beau's, and the two begin to uncover a nightmarish conspiracy that could involve people in high places - including their own top brass.

For the reasons I liked JA Jance in the first....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The author has gone form male friendly to making every case a tutorial on feminism and how the world has changed.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Always, JP Beaumont. He can no longer be the hero in a cop story since he spends his days learning about what men no longer can do.

What does Ala Nebelthau bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great reader

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

This is my last book of JA Jance. She has changed dramatically.

Disappointed

I loved the book but I am disappointed in you changing the narrator. Please stick with one

A Good book

All of these Beau Beaumont books are good, this is one of the even better ones. It's good to see an injustice turned around. It gets complicated, which is good, it makes you think. It's satisfying, and that is Very Good!

Don’t know how I missed this one.....

Sure glad that I found it though. Not 100% thrilled with the narrator change, but nonetheless, I love JP Beaumont! Great story.

JA Janice continues to flow.

Excellent book in the JP Beaumont series. Ala Nebelthau is a MUCH better reader than Gene Engene of the auto books!

Story very good

I really liked this book. The narrator was a bit hard to follow because he used basically the same voice for every character. If he started a sentence for a character in a slightly different voice it soon ended up the same as the others before the end of a sentence. This is a true JA Jance goodie.

She never fails!

Once again J. A. Jance has proven to be one of the best writers I've ever read. JP Beaumont is my favorite character of Jance's. I only wish she would write faster, I can't wait for the next book.

JP Beaumont is Perfect

Love JP, love Mel, and all the friends and family in these stories. This is book 17 - and Beau is back in the saddle. (Book 16 paired him with another police person, and it was not as good as the JP series.)
