Publisher's Summary

Soon after she moves to Spencer, Maryland, multi-millionaire Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive community is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself “Pay Back” begins terrorizing her. When Katrina is found strangled, all evidence points to her terrorist.

Three months later the file on her murder is still open with only vague speculations from the local police department when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother’s home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother’s journal, this retired cop puts all his detective skills to work to pick up where the local investigators have left off.

"Audible, please no more from Books in Motion!!"

I was extremely sorry to have wasted my money on this audio book. Not only is the plot predictable and the characters one-dimensional, but the author seemed to make no effort whatsoever to hide her own personal prejudices (fat people, ugly people, people with bad habits, etc.,) or values (e.g., one character, when accused of anti-semitism, denies the accusation and snipes that, rather, he would have assumed his accuser to be an atheist. There is no later character development to explain this bias.) This would have been sufficient distraction in a less silly book, but combined with the melodramatic, TV movie plot and characters, it was all the more offensive. I felt like a reluctant listener in a catty gossip session.
Furthermore, the narrator was amateurish and seemed to join with the author's sneering. I found this unbearably tiresome and finished the book only because I had spent the money and intended to write this review. In my experience, Books in Motion productions nearly all have this same amateurish quality and I try to avoid them - alas, this time I didn't notice the producer until after I'd made my purchase.
One more complaint: the role of the dog in this book was, frankly, bewildering. I don't understand why the author bothered inserting this 'genius dog' character only to have his human companions constantly scolding him - even after they'd given due credit for his repeated amazing (and improbable) acts of helpful intelligence. Had I cared more about the book and its characters I might have felt exasperated.
Honestly, I disliked listening to this book so much it actually soured my mood for a couple of days. One star feels generous, and I give it only because there were no horribly glaring grammatical goofs (though there were plenty of minor ones) or plot holes.

    "Captivating mysteries"

I would have given this five stars except I didn't totally like the constant derogatory description of an overweight character.

This is the story of a retired detective who was getting ready to file bankruptcy due to a very expensive divorce - his wife cheated on him but because of who she cheated with she got everything. Right when he gets ready to file for bankruptcy he inherits from his birth mother (who he didn't know and had only met once) who was a famous fiction writer. Now he has to adjust from having nothing to having $270 million plus owning a five star inn and restaurant.

He moves into her house and the fun begins. Even though he's retired he can't help getting involved in murders that had already happened before he moved to the neighborhood and the ones that happened afterwards. There's a lot of great characters and a dog that a trainer says is a genius even though he got a dishonorable discharge from the Army who adds to the fun.

This is the only book Audible has of the series so let's hope it gets the rest of them.

    "A Quilty Pleasure"

I discovered this series as a Kindle download and while it is not a great piece of literature - I loved the characters and the setting. I guess I am a sucker for the old "your life is in the toilet when you suddenly find out you are the son of the #1 mystery writer in the USA and you have inherited her estate and are now fabulously wealthy and have wonderful friends and a good murder to solve" plot. But, seriously if you need a little cozy this is just plain old fashion fun. I do hope Audible will get the full series.

    "It was okay"

This was an okay read. I fely like I was readind the Maltease Falcon. The story had a throwback noir feeling. The story lasted to long. It seemed to go on and on at some points. I might read the next book. It wasn't bad, just not for me.
