Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - In typical James Patterson fashion, Invisible was suspenseful, fast-paced, and filled with twists and turns. The story follows Emmy Dockery, a brash and outspoken FBI analyst who is convinced that a string of supposedly accidental deaths is actually the work of one unknown serial killer. Dismissed by both her family and the Bureau, Emmy must find the link between these closed cases before more lives are claimed. Patterson and Ellis did a spectacular job with both character development and plotline. There was never a dull moment as the story built up to its twisted and surprising climax. I couldn’t put this book down – and with January LaVoy as the female narrator, I can’t wait to revisit this story in audio. –Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire.

Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, field agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected. That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day—and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes?

Invisible is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

Twisted and exciting!

Would you consider the audio edition of Invisible to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, but I loved the audio edition.

What other book might you compare Invisible to and why?

From my recent Audible purchases, Stephen King's "Mr. Mercedes" had a very similar darkness. They are both chilling and ingenious with plot and outcome.

Which character – as performed by January LaVoy and Kevin Collins – was your favorite?

Kevin Collins was fantastic in his voice of the antagonist. Methodic and precise, just the way he was written to be.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Great voices and pace of reading. Kept me engaged the entire time!

Any additional comments?

This is so far my favorite audio book I've ever listened to. I couldn't wait to get back to listening when I'd have to take time away, for work or sleep or whatnot. Fantastic!

RIVETING

This is crime/thriller writing at its best. Won't repeat what others have said better. I've found Patterson disappointing last few years. NOT THIS TIME. The Master is back.

O. M. G.

I don't know if I've read a James Patterson novel recently; I like David Ellis. So this story I wanted to listen to. Two narrators, I like that, I've had that before. This one going on concurrently. The "bad guy" was very creepy, Kevin Collins did an excellent job. So excellent, I wondered if I could get through the rest of the book without listening to the bad guy chapters! The evil was a little too sick to what I'm used to. I started to cringe before the next chapter started in case it was the bad guy's chapter. HOWEVER, if you are as sensitive as I am, don't give in - you really need to listen to both sides of the story. I couldn't stop listening, this is a hold your breath, heart stopping, brilliantly crafted story. Genius bad guy, genius good guys. Makes me want to be a research analyst for the F.B.I.

WHOA - Didn't see that coming

Any additional comments?

I was POSITIVE I had the ending figured out and even then still couldn't stop listening. I've already recommended the book to every book reading friend I have that like this genre.

AND I was WRONG about the bad guy. I've already had to re-read the last chapter and making plans to listen to the entire book again. The narrator was excellent and the story line spot on. I'll certainly look for more books by Ellis and kudos to Patterson to find and coauthor with some good artists

Entertaining but poor character development

The book is an easy listen however the central female character comes across as immature and childish making it difficult to connect with her. If you focus on that, she becomes annoying so I recommend listening to this just as a filler book and if it happens to be on sale. I'm a JP fan but this one didn't measure up to me.
